SO HOO CHUNSA
~Boarding the flight to Seoul Korea. Tony Ahn and little sister Yuri, finally find their seats and settle in~
“Oh Tony oppa, I’m not sure that this was such a good idea after all.” I said as I gazed out of the 747’s window.
“C’mon Yuri, this’ll be a good change for you. Anyway, it’s about time you got to know your home country again. You need to get away, leave things behind.” Tony replied, giving me an anxious look as he sat down.
“But, my Korean is not very good.” I grumbled. “Kang Ta oppa will laugh at me.”
“How many times do we have to go over this? Korean people can speak English just as well as you and I. Anyway, you speak to Grandma and Grandpa in Korean. Kang Ta won’t laugh. He’s like a real oppa to you. Trust me, you have nothing to worry about.” my brother reassured me.
“Ok, I’ll stop complaining. I guess I’m just so sick of everything. I feel so….” I trailed off as I stared unseeingly out of the window.
“Come here Yuri.” My brother made me lean my head on his shoulder as he put his arm around me. “Stop thinking about it. This is a chance for you to start all over. I want to see you happy again. My kid sister, cheerful, bubbly and happy.”
Tears came to my eyes as I continued to stare out of the window. How could I stop thinking about it? It was my world. It consumed my every thought. The day I stop thinking about it, that is the day that I will truly be happy again. But right now, that day seemed so out of reach.
~in the Lee house~
DING DONG…
“MinWoo oppa! Can you get that? I’m in the shower!” yelled Lee Mi Yun.
“Yeah, yeah” grumbled Lee Min Woo, as he got up from watching the TV and stumbled to open the front door.
“Hey Min Woo! How’s it going?” greeted Kim Dong Wan as he gave his best friend a slap on the back.
“Alright, a little tired though. My little sis is still in the shower. Have a seat.” Said Min Woo, dropping himself on the couch once again. “I’m all ready to go.”
“Hye Sung, Yoo Jin, Brian and Hwan Hee will be at the mall entrance waiting for us.” Dong Wan said. “Man, we’ll be late if Yunnie doesn’t hurry it up.”
“Yeah I know, she’s beautifying herself just for you.” MinWoo said sarcastically.
“Hey, I heard that. I’m done, let’s go.” Mi Yun said as she came down the stairs dressed in some casual jeans and a light blue sweater.
Dong Wan gave her a quick kiss as he said “You look beautiful.”
“Yeah, I know.” Mi Yun said smiling cheekily, kissing him back.
“Puuulllleeeaasseee. I really don’t wanna be seeing this.” Min Woo said rolling his eyes as he rushed out the front door, heading for the car. Dong Wan and Mi Yun followed him and soon they were speeding along the highway to the shopping mall to meet the others.
~at Kang Ta’s apartment~
“When are they going to get here?” Kang Ta wondered just as a taxi pulled up outside on the street. “Finally.”
Kang Ta ran to the elevator and went down the three floors. He burst outside the front doors and ran to meet Tony oppa and Yuri. It was the first time in 5 years that he would meet Yuri. He still imagined Yuri to be the little cheerful, bubbly cousin that he remembered. Tony oppa came back to Korea every summer break. As he walked towards the taxi, a girl of average height with long straight black hair, dressed in jeans and a long sleeved T-shirt stepped out, followed by her brother.
“Tony hyung! Yuri!” Kang Ta shouted as he ran up to greet his two cousins from America.
“Hey Kang Ta, how are you? You remember Yuri right?” Tony said.
“Yeah, vaguely, but I see she isn’t that little girl I remembered. Wow, you’re a lot taller.” Kang Ta said, looking curiously at Yuri.
“Kang Ta oppa, you’ve grown so much too! And hey, I’m not that little 13 year old you guys always picked on anymore.” Yuri put on a smile and hugged her cousin.
“Let’s get your stuff and go inside. We’ve all got some catching up to do!” Kang Ta said as he helped his cousin’s with their bags and went up to his apartment.
~Outside the mall~
The group of friends had gathered and were sitting on the steps outside, trying to decide what to do with the day.
“Hey guys, you know my best friend is coming to Korea today from America with his little sister?” Hye Sung said all of a sudden.
Everyone turned their attention to him.
“Really? Where are they staying? Maybe you could get them to come out with us.” Brian suggested. “It’d give us something to do too!”
“They’re staying with their cousin, Kang Ta. I think. I was going to call them earlier, but better let them get settled in first.” Hye Sung replied.
“What?! Their cousin’s name is Kang Ta? Kang Ta Ahn?” asked Hwan Hee.
“Yeah, that’s it.” Hye Sung remembered.
“Kang Ta hyung is one of our good friends!” Brian said. “Maybe we can drop by his place later on!”
“Yeah, maybe. Alright, later on.” Hye Sung said. Everyone agreed.
~Back in Los Angeles, California, United States of America~
RING RING
“Hello, is Yuri there please?”
“Sorry, she left for Korea yesterday. She’s moved there for college. May I know who is speaking?” Mrs Ahn asked.
“Sorry to disturb you.” A familiar voice answered before hanging up.
Mrs Ahn placed the phone back on the receiver and wondered to herself. I’ve heard that voice before. It sure sounded like Andy…
“She’s gone to Korea?! She didn’t even tell me!” Andy paced furiously around his room. Then Andy remembered. “She doesn’t even want to know who I am now. Hasn’t been returning my calls, refuses to see me. I have really screwed up! I can’t blame her. How could I be so stupid? Argh…” he yelled in frustration as he threw a pillow across the room.
“I don’t want to let her go. I messed up, but I am going to go and beg her forgiveness. I need to explain things to her. I love her too much to just give up like this.” Andy said with determination on his face. “No matter what it takes, I want to make her see how sorry I am.”
With that, Andy strode outside to the living room to tell his mother that he had decided what he was going to do with his summer. Go to Korea.
~Back at Kang Ta’s apartment~
“Kang Ta oppa, this is a really nice place you have here” I said as I looked around the bright apartment. It was very modern and at the same time, cozy looking. She couldn’t believe that she would be staying here for the rest of her college education.
“Thank you, but it was my parents who chose it. It’s very convenient so I guess that’s why they picked it.” My cousin said as he placed our bags in two different rooms. “Yuri, your room is this one, and Tony hyung, that one’s yours. I sleep in the one on the other side of the corridor.”
“Thanks Kang Ta, we’ll go unpack, then we can show Yuri what Korea has to offer!” Tony oppa said.
I wondered to myself “What does Korea have to offer?”
~An hour later~
DING DONG, DING DONG, DING DONG. The bell was being pressed furiously.
“I’ll get it!” Kang Ta said as he quickly rushed to the door to stop whoever it was outside from causing any more racket.
“Kang Ta hyung! How’s it going? We were just driving by and Hye Sung hyung mentioned that your cousin’s just arrived.” Brian said as the whole gang filed into the apartment.
“Whoa, guys. I didn’t know you were going to bring the WHOLE gang here!” Kang Ta exclaimed as he gazed at his friends, and also some new faces he did not recognize.
In walked Hye Sung, Min Woo, Dong Wan, Mi Yun, Yoo Jin, Brian and Hwan Hee. They crowded into the apartment and came face to face with Tony and Yuri.
“Wow, Kang Ta oppa sure has a lot of friends.” I thought as I came out of my room and met my cousin’s friends for the first time.
“Ok guys, this is Tony hyung and Yuri, my cousins from Los Angeles, California.” Kang Ta introduced, “Tony and Yuri, this is Brian and Hwan Hee, two of my best friends. Um, the others, I’ve never been properly introduced to before.”
“Tony!” Hye Sung exclaimed as he walked over and gave Tony a big hug. “Glad to have you back, this is your little sis? Ok, I’ll introduce everyone else. These are my friends Min Woo, Dong Wan oppa, Mi Yun – Min Woo’s little sister and Dong Wan oppa’s girlfriend, my friend Brian, Hwan Hee and Yoo Jin – Brian’s cousin. Phew, long list.”
Everyone sat down wherever they could in the small living room. I sat next to Tony oppa and Mi Yun with Dong Wan next to her on the couch. Everyone else sat on the couch opposite except for Kang Ta and Hye Sung who sat on the floor.
“What a small world this is! Who would have thought that we all knew each other! Well, sort of.” Said Hye Sung happily.
“So, what’s everyone doing for summer? Anyone going away?” asked Tony.
“Nah, we’re all staying. I guess that means we can hang out together.” Brian said.
“Well, what are we gonna do now? We could all go the beach and just hang for awhile, that’s if Tony and Yuri aren’t too tired of course.” Mi Yun said.
“No, I’m not tired, how bout you Yuri?” Tony asked looking at me anxiously.
“I’m ok oppa, let’s go out. I’m sick of being cooped up. I need to see what Korea can offer! Like you said.” I smiled.
“Ok! Let’s go! We have enough cars to take us all.” Hye Sung said as he jumped up.
We all got up and walked out to the cars. I was excited over meeting so many new friends. They were all so friendly! Maybe coming to Korea was just what I needed.
~In Dong Wan’s car~
I ended up in Dong Wan oppa’s car. Sitting in the back seat next to the left window and Yoon Suk on my right. Next to him was Min Woo. Dong Wan was driving and Mi Yun sat in the passenger seat. I was beginning to think that those two were inseparable.
“So, Yuri, how old are you? Tony oppa is probably the same age as Kang Ta oppa.” Hwan Hee asked me.
“Hwan Hee oppa, haven’t you learnt never to ask a girl’s age?” I smiled at him. “I’m 18. And how about the rest of you?” I asked looking around the car.
“Well, I’m 20, Min Woo hyung is 21, Dong Wan hyung 22, and Mi Yun…” Hwan Hee trailed off uncertainly.
“I’m 17. So I guess we have something in common. Our ages aren’t that different, unlike these old oppas here.” Mi Yun winked at me in the mirror. “How are you enjoying Korea, Yuri? Or have you not seen enough of it yet?”
“Mmm, I’ve been here before, it’s changed a lot in five years. I’m just glad for the change of atmosphere.” I said.
“We’ll make it as comfortable for you here as we can. You’re in safe hands here.” Hwan Hee said as he smiled at me. I could not help but believe him. He had such beautiful eyes.
I hadn’t really had a good chance to look at my new friends until now. Mi Yun seemed so friendly. I was beginning to see that I was going to become good friends with her. Being taller than me, she carried herself well with long layered hair, dyed a soft brown colour. She was so carefree and happy. I could see why Dong Wan oppa cared for her so much. They were a really cute pair. The five year age difference did not seem apparent at all. Dong Wan oppa was tall, tanned and had a wonderful maturity about him. The way he talked reminded me of a very knowledgeable person. Min Woo oppa was a bit more carefree. Like Mi Yun, he had the same characteristics. He was not as tall as Dong Wan oppa, and his hair had been dyed a blue/purple colour. It really suited him. Hwan Hee oppa was harder for me to look at, seeing as he was sitting right next to me. He was tall, had a wonderful complexion and had blonde streaked hair. The thing that stood out about him was his eyes, they were the most beautiful eyes I’d ever seen. It’s so unfair when it’s always the guys who get the nice eyes. When I looked into them, it was like I could see inside him. He was quite talkative and lively. Wow, I can’t believe that I’ve made so many new friends in such a short time.
~In Hye Sung’s car~
Hye Sung was driving with Tony next to him and Brian, Yoo Jin and Kang Ta in the back seat.
“So, your name is Yoo Jin right?” Kang Ta said as the other three were having a heated discussion on basketball. Kang Ta could see that Yoo Jin was just not enjoying their topic of conversation.
“Yeah it is. Yours is Kang Ta right?” asked Yen Ling.
“You got that right. I didn’t know Brian had a cousin. He never mentioned it to me.” Kang Ta said. And such a pretty one too. I wonder how old she is, he thought to himself.
“Haha, yeah, well I guess that’s Brian for you. I guess I haven’t been around all that much. Studying and all, I’m off to college after break. Finally.” Yoo Jin replied, smiling at Kang Ta. How nice of him, he isn’t the average guy, he’s not talking about basketball like the others. He’s pretty good looking, I’ll admit.
“Oh, so your just entering college? So you must be only… what, 19?” Kang Ta tried a round about way to ask Yoo Jin’s age.
Yoo Jin smiled, “Yes, I’m 19. How about you? Um, age I mean.”
“I’m 21. But just first year. I went traveling after high school for a year, so I guess I’m a little bit behind.” Kang Ta replied. She’s only 19. I really love her smile. Is there something going on here? Hmm…
“He’s 21. I really love his personality. It seems so considerate and just not like other guys. And he has a really cute smile. Wow, am I starting to like this guy?” thought Yoo Jin at the same time, staring at Kang Ta.
They both realized that they were staring at each other and quickly, turned away embarrassed. Brian, Tony and Hye Sung were still in a heated discussion about which NBA teams were the best.
“Ah, finally, we’re here.” Tony oppa said as he stepped out of the car, breathing in the cool fresh sea breeze that blew across the bay.
“Yeah, doesn’t that sea breeze give you a big boost of energy? Like you want to do something totally crazy?” said Min Woo oppa with a twinkle in his eye as he stepped out of Dong Wan’s car. Dong Wan oppa locked his car and he too had a twinkle in his eye.
“What are you guys planning? I know that look in your eye Min Woo oppa. And Dong Wan, I don’t want you following him. He’s plotting something.” Mi Yun said cautiously as she looked from her boyfriend to her brother.
We were standing behind the beach wall, the sun had finally peeked out from the clouds and it sparkled on the sea like diamonds. What a beautiful day, I thought. All of a sudden I heard a squeal as Dong Wan oppa and Min Woo oppa picked Mi Yun up and ran onto the beach.
“Put me down! Put me down! Dong Wan!!!” Mi Yun screamed.
All the guys seemed to get the same idea and all of a sudden, Yoo Jin and I were being swept off our feet and were being carried onto the sand.
“Tony oppa! Hwan Hee oppa! Put me down! No! Don’t you DARE chuck me into that water!” I yelled as they carried me quickly over the sand. Yoo Jin was doing the same, kicking and screaming as Kang Ta and Brian carried her over the sand.
“Hwan Hee, please, I’m begging you. C’mon it’s my first day in Korea, you can’t do this to me!” I begged him.
He looked at me with his gorgeous eyes and finally said. “Ok, just this once. After all, it is your first day here.”
Tony looked disappointed but smiled strangely and placed my feet back on solid ground. Not all too solid, seeing as it was sand.
“Thankyou very much.” I sighed in relief. I could see that I was the lucky one. Mi Yun and Yoo Jin unnie on the other hand were not as lucky. They were chucked into the water, clothes and all. But the guys didn’t get away with anything. The two girls soaked the others until they were just as wet. Hye Sung, Tony, Hwan Hee and I stood on the wet sand and laughed.
After the very wet friends decided to finally come out of the water, it was close to dinner time. The six of them sat on the sand to dry off. It wasn’t long before they were dry. It had gotten very sunny. When they were dry, we walked down to the nearest restaurant and had our dinner there.
Afterwards, we decided to take a nice walk beside the sea wall that stretched for kilometers. It was sort of strange, we were all paired off nicely. I don’t know how it happened but, I ended up walking with Hwan Hee. He seemed to quite like that idea.
“What a day! I really loved it. Thanks for not dunking me in the water before.” I said.
“That’s ok. I knew you’d be upset. It was a wonderful day wasn’t it?” he said as we gazed out at the reflection of the moon on the water. It was twilight.
“I can’t believe I’ve made so many friends in just one day. Not to mention, they are so wonderful. You guys really do know how to cheer someone up.” I accidently realized what I’d said and looked at him nervously.
“What do you mean cheer up? We were just having fun, as always. Did you need cheering up?” he asked anxiously, looking at me with those wonderful eyes. I felt like I would melt right there.
“No… Hwan Hee, you have really nice eyes.” I said, inspite of myself. Oh my god, I was falling in love with this guy! I couldn’t believe it.
“Thanks… I… er…” he started to blush.
“What? What were you going to say?” I asked softly. At that time, we had stopped walking and were sitting on the sea wall. He was so cute when he blushed.
“I really like you Yuri. I know I’ve only met you today, but, it seems like I’ve known you forever.” He said, not looking at me. “Do you want to go out sometime?”
“Um, we are out.” I said mischievously, “Yes I’d love to.” surprising myself. What is up with me? The words had just come out of my mouth like I had not even needed to think about it.
“Um, I would understand if you don’t wanna….. er what?” he stuttered looking at me.
“I said, I’d love to.” I smiled and took his hand. We started to walk again. It was the most wonderful night and I didn’t want it to end. He actually likes me! I couldn’t believe it.
Hwan Hee and Yuri, hand in hand walked in the moonlight and were thinking the exact same thoughts, without either of them knowing it.
~Further down the beach~
Kang Ta and Yoo Jin were trying to fill the empty silences between them.
“Man, look at those two.” Kang Ta said pointing towards Mi Yun and Dong Wan making out on the sea wall. “GET A ROOM!” he yelled loudly. They didn’t even look in his direction.
“Haha, yeah, they suit each other. So cute. Hey Kang Ta, look at Yuri and Hwan Hee. Is there something going on there? They’re holding hands!” Yoo Jin said looking further back along the seawall.
“Yeah, let’s join them.” Kang Ta said softly as he nervously grasped Yoo Jin hand as they slowly walked along. To his surprise, she didn’t pull away. She just smiled at him at kept walking. Both of them looked out at the moonlit water and thought of how wonderful a night it really was.
When we all met up again, we were caught up in our own little worlds. Mi Yun and Dong Wan were inseparable, Yoo Jin and Kang Ta were holding hands but dropped them when they approached us, and Hwan Hee and I just continued to hold hands. Min Woo, Hye Sung, Tony and Brian all started to act strangely. Min Woo grabbed Hye Sung and pretended to make out with him while Tony got down on one knee and pretended to propose to Brian. I rolled my eyes when I saw them. They could be so immature.
“I see there have been some developments,” Tony said, eyeing Hwan Hee and I. I just smiled at him.
“Yes, Tony and I are to be married next summer, you are all invited on the spot!” Brian said laughing. We all laughed at that and then decided to head home.
~Kang Ta’s apartment~
“What a wonderful night.” I sighed to myself as I brushed my teeth in the bathroom of Kang Ta’s apartment. “Hwan Hee is one of the best things that has ever happened to me.”
“Hey Yuri, you and Hwan Hee seemed awfully cozy in the car coming back.” Tony oppa nudged me as he came in to brush his teeth.
“He’s wonderful.” I said as I spat out the toothpaste and washed up.
“He seems like a really nice guy. You and him are so nice together.” Tony oppa said smiling at me.
“Mmm, I hope so. He’s just so great, not to mention, totally gorgeous.” I replied as I walked out of the bathroom. I really hope that he is the one for me. His wonderful eyes! I just couldn’t believe that he’d asked me out! I only just met him! Was I making a mistake at being so hasty in giving him my answer. No, I just didn’t care. This was the first time in months that I had been truly happy and I wanted it to stay that way.
~In L.A.~
“Why won’t you let me go?” Andy asked in frustation as he paced the room glaring angrily at his mother.
“I can’t let you go Andy, you have to wait until your father get’s back from Japan. That’s only one week. Just be patient. We have to discuss this with him.” Andy’s mother replied.
“But…” Andy said.
“Don’t argue Andy, you have to wait for your father. He will be awfully angry if I just let you run off to Korea without first discussing it as a family.” His mother replied.
“Argh, I can’t do anything without a family discussion!” Andy stomped off to his room in frustration. I’m 20 years old! I can make my own decisions!
~A few days later~
“Let’s go for karaoke!!!” Hye Sung suggested as we were deciding on what to do.
It had been a long day of shopping and we were tired, but still felt like doing something before heading off to bed. I didn’t want the night to end. You could have painted a picture of the scene in the park today. With the 3 couples now going strong, we were like a real life drama series.
“Alright! It’ll be fun!” Tony oppa said as he jumped up “I suggest Hye Sung’s place! He has the biggest TV and the best sound system!”
“Ok, my place, let’s go!” Hye Sung said.
We organized our car pooling again and set off. I was a little bit worried. Singing was something that brought back memories, and I wasn’t exactly sure that I wanted that.
~Hye Sung’s place~
We were all lounging around in Hye Sung’s huge living room setting up the sound system ready for some serious howling.
“So, Yuri, do you sing much?” Mi Yun asked me as the boys were getting some drinks out of the fridge.
“Well, I haven’t done it for awhile. Only in the shower I guess.” I smiled at Mi Yun and Yoo Jin who were looking at me.
Tony oppa came over, “Yuri? She’s the star…. Ouch!” he said as I poked him in the side. I shook my head sullenly and he shut up.
“She’s the what?” Yoo Jin asked.
“No, nothing, let’s get started shall we?” Tony said changing the subject.
“Yeah! Let’s get this show on the road!” Hye Sung said as he came back into the room holding a six pack.
Hye Sung got the ball rolling, he sang wonderfully and everyone applauded. The microphone was passed around along with the beers. I was getting nervous. I’d managed to avoid singing until I had no choice.
“Ok Yuri, it’s your turn.” Brian said, passing the microphone to me after he’d beautifully sung the Brian McNight Song – Back at one.
“Um, but I can’t sing well.” I said nervously looking around at the others.
“Just give it a try. There’s no harm in it. C’mon, you’ve heard the rest of us.” Hwan Hee said from behind me.
“Mmm, ok. I guess it’s only fair.” I said. “Which song?”
“How about My reflection by Christina Aguilera?” Min Woo suggested.
“Ok.” I said as Min Woo oppa placed the disc inside the player and started it.
I sang through the whole song, forgetting that the others were in the room with me. The song was so expressive and I was caught up in it. When I finished, the whole room was totally silent. Hwan Hee hugged me from behind and the others applauded loudly.
“Damn girl, you have one helluva voice.” Brian commented.
“No, it’s not that good.” I said embarrassed.
“And you told me you couldn’t sing.” Mi Yun said incredulously. “You have sung before. Hasn’t she Tony oppa?”
“Yes, she used to sing.” Tony said looking at me. He was sitting on the other side of the room and I couldn’t do anything to stop him saying anything. “She sang for church, some small concerts for charity and little things like that back in L.A.”
“It’s nothing. The church needed some acts for their charity concerts, so I said I would help.” I said brushing it off.
“You have such a beautiful voice Yuri. Have you considered singing as a career? I think you would have a chance. I can’t believe someone hasn’t picked you up and signed you on as yet.” Kang Ta said.
“My dad has a friend who is a manager of SM entertainment. You know, the huge Korean music corporation. I can ask him to listen to you. That voice shouldn’t be wasted on just karaoke and singing in the shower. You have to open up your opportunities!” Hye Sung mentioned.
“What? You’re joking right?” I asked. I just couldn’t believe that they were actually serious about all of this. Singing was something I loved, but actually taking it up as a career? It all sounded unbelievable. A total far out dream.
“See dongseng, I knew that you should have done something back in the States. Like, send demos to record companies.” Tony oppa said.
“C’mon Yuri, just give it a try. It can’t hurt.” Hwan Hee oppa encouraged.
“Yeah, you have nothing to lose.” Dong Wan oppa said. “Trust me, we know Hye Sung’s dad really well. I’m sure his friend will give you the best chance at entering the music scene.”
“Ok, ok. I’ll give it a go. Now can we please talk about something else?” I asked, finally giving in.
I couldn’t believe that I’d talked them into seeing Hye Sung’s father’s friend. Whatever happened next, was all up to God. I just wondered what he had in store for me.
~The next morning, in Mr Shin’s office~
“Yuri, Hye Sung tells me what a beautiful voice you have. He was very excited when he called and I’m sure you will show us some talent.” Mr Shin said, smiling as he ushered Hye Sung, Tony, Mi Yun, Dong Wan, Min Woo and I into his office. The others couldn’t make it because they had a family get together and had invited Kang Ta and Hwan Hee. I was very nervous and I had no idea what to expect. I kept on telling myself not to expect too much. This could be the start of a whole new life for me.
“I’m will try my best Mr Shin.” I said.
Right at that moment, a tall man walked into the room and greeted us with a smile.
“I am Lee Soo Man, manager of SM entertainment. Pleased to meet you all. So, which of you is the one with the talented voice?” Mr Lee asked looking around the room at us.
“Here she is” Mr Shin said stepping beside me, “Yuri Ahn. How about we hear a little demo?”
“Yes, please show us what a wonderful voice I’m sure you have.” Mr Lee said. “Do you know Hero by Mariah Carey?”
“Um, yes, I think I can remember how to sing it.” I said nervously. It happened to be one of my all time favourite songs to sing.
“Go ahead Yuri, let us hear what you have to offer.” Mr Lee said.
“Yeah go for it Yuri!” Tony said giving me a nudge.
“Ok, here goes.” I said. And I started to sing. It was a truly beautiful song and I loved every word of it. I started out nervously, but soon, I was so caught up in the beauty of the song, that I once again forgot everyone in the room and sang alone. When I’d finished, everyone applauded again.
“I’m sorry, it’s not very good. I haven’t sung that song in a very long time.” I said looking down.
“That was very touching Yuri, to see you sing with such passion. Your voice is truly beautiful and I’d like to hear more of it.” Mr Lee said seriously.
I blushed deeply and said, “Kam sa ham ni da, Mr Lee.”
“My pleasure, we need to get that enchanting voice of yours out into the gayo world. Your life is going to change dramatically from now on. I will arrange everything and soon, Yuri Ahn will be a name known all over the world.” He said smiling and shaking my hand. He said a quick but hearty goodbye to everyone in the room and briskly walked out.
“Yuri unnie! You’ve done it!” Mi Yun screamed in excitement as she rushed over to me and gave me a big hug. “Congratulations! I’m gonna have a friend who is a famous singer!”
Everyone came over after that and I was enveloped in hugs from all my friends. I was still in shock. It all seemed so surreal.
“Yuri dongseng, I am so proud of you! Everything you’ve worked at has finally paid off! Big time! Just think what omma and appa are going to say!” Tony oppa whispered giving me the biggest hug of all. I had tears in my eyes, I was ecstatic.
“Mr Shin, thankyou so much for giving me this overwhelming opportunity. This is my dream!” I said going to him and shaking his hand.
“Now now Yuri, I didn’t do anything. I just happened to have friends in high places. All credit goes to you and your talent. You should really thank Hye Sung for pointing you out to us.” He said smiling.
“Yeah Yuri, where’s the thanks huh?” Hye sung oppa asked from behind me.
“Hye Sung oppa! THANKYOU SO MUCH! You have no idea how much this means to me! This has been one of my dreams forever! And now, thanks to you, your father and his friend, it actually might come true!” I said giving him a huge hug.
“That’s ok Yuri. You deserve every bit of all this.” He said, “Let’s get going guys. We gota go and celebrate!”
After that, we all left Mr Shin’s office and celebrated like crazy until night time.
~Later that night~
Hwan Hee and I were sitting at the park near the apartment he, Brian and Yoo Jin shared looking out across the lake at the moon reflected on the dark water. The party was going strong inside on the 2nd floor. We could hear the music thumping and the laughter of our friends filtering through the curtains into the warm night air.
“Congratulations baby!” Hwan Hee murmured as he kissed me lightly.
“Thankyou.” I said softly back. “It still feels unreal to me. I just can’t believe it!”
“I knew you could do it. You have determination. But, your intention of coming Korea wasn’t to become a singer right?” he asked me as he put his arm around my shoulders.
“No, I wanted to go to college and study Korean. I felt like it was time I learned to speak, read and write in my native language properly. My Korean is really bad so I was so glad when Tony oppa said that most Korean’s can speak English quite well.” I replied.
“Your Korean is fine. Well, it seems like you’ll have to postpone learning Korean for awhile now.” Hwan Hee said.
“Well, maybe I can get you to teach me.” I said looking up into his eyes.
“Mmm, maybe.” He replied, as our lips met.
I was so happy, here I was sitting here kissing this totally gorgeous and wonderful guy in Korea with heaps of friends. It was as if I’d never left Korea at all. Nothing could spoil this moment for me.
“Hey baby, you ready?” Andy asked as he put his arms around me.
“Yeah, just about. Ok, let’s go.” I replied as I finished applying my lipgloss.
We left my house and walked out to Andy’s BMW. Soon, we were on our way to one of his friend’s parties. I’d promised Andy that I’d go with him, but I still felt a little uncomfortable seeing as I didn’t really know anyone there. I looked over to Andy while he was driving, he looked so damn good. We had been going together for close to three years now. I was in Junior High only 14 years old and he was 16. We met through one of our friends and we’d been going out ever since. I really loved him dearly. He told me that he would marry me after college. We had even given each other silver promise rings that we wore on our forefingers. I stared at the ring on my finger as we drove to the party and smiled happily to myself.
Andy and I walked in to the already bouncing party like the homecoming couple of the year. I spotted Sarah, a girl I knew from school with her boyfriend Jason sitting on the far side of the room. They seemed to be the only people I recognized from our school. The rest of the people were Andy’s college friends. I knew most of Andy’s friends except this party was held by some of his friend’s, friends.
“C’mon Yuri, let me introduce you to some people. A lot of my friends are dying to meet you. I don’t usually hang around them, but that doesn’t matter.” He said as he guided me through the crowded rooms into the kitchen where I spotted Jin and Eric, two of Andy’s closest friends.
“Hey Yuri, you’re looking mighty fine tonight.” Jin said grinning at me, “Oh, sorry, you always look fine, so this is absolutely no exception.”
“Yes Jin, you’re drunk already. This party just started. And you’re close to being off your face. You are looking pretty good yourself.” I said smiling at Jin.
“Yo Yuri, didn’t think you would come.” Eric said, greeting me.
“Andy asked me to come. Couldn’t let him down could I?” I said giving Andy a quick kiss.
“Yuri, you’re too good to him. What any guy would give for a girlfriend like you.” Eric said shaking his head and slapping Andy on the back.
“Eric, I don’t deserve that, anyway, how come you weren’t watchin’ Jin. You know he can’t control himself. He’s drunk before the night even started.” I said shaking my head and looking at Jin who was now walking around the room trying to pick up girls.
“Hey, I didn’t know he was going to get wasted so fast! I didn’t even know he was drinking. Forget it, I’ve had enough of trying to stop him. It’s his business.” Eric said annoyed. “I’m gonna go and check out the action out back. Catcha’s later.”
“Alright. C’mon baby, let’s go back to the party.” Andy said.
“Ok.” I replied.
Soon, Andy went to talk to his friends and I was just sitting there on the couch with nothing to do. I smoothed out my dress and went over to Sarah and Jason. We talked for the whole night. I was a little bit annoyed that Andy hadn’t come back so I decided to walk around and try to find him.
I walked past the back porch and spotted him. Then, with a sickening feeling, saw that he was kissing this tall, blonde-haired girl. She was all over him! I couldn’t believe it. He suddenly saw me and pushed the girl away. That was when I ran back through the house and out the front door to the front yard. I finally sat down under a large tree to catch my breath. I could hear Andy catching up to me yelling out my name.
“Yuri! Yuri! Come back!” Andy yelled as he came out the front door and rushed over to where I was sitting.
Tears were streaming down my face by then and he reached out to hug me. I pushed him away, not wanting him to touch me. He looked hurt. I didn’t care, I think it was me who was supposed to be hurt.
“I’m so sorry Yuri, it’s not what it looked like. I can explain.” Andy asked looking at me with his puppy dog eyes. But I wasn’t going to be fooled, he wasn’t drunk, so he couldn’t use that excuse.
“You don’t have to explain, it was plain for everyone to see. I just can’t believe you would do that to me.” I said turning away from him. My voice was angry and hurt. “Take me home. I want to go home.” I wouldn’t have asked him, but I didn’t know anyone at the party, Jin and Eric were drunk and Sarah and Jason went home awhile ago.
“Ok, I’ll take you home, but…” Andy said.
“Just take me home Andy, you’ve said enough for one night.” I got up and walked to his car, not looking at his face.
He tried to explain what happened to me, but I refused to listen. I just turned up the music really loud and looked out my window. He turned it back down and grabbed my hand.
“Yuri, I’m really sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you, it’s just Celine…” Andy started to say looking at me.
“Andy! Don’t say another damn word. I can’t believe you are even going to try and tell me her name! I don’t want to hear it! Ok?” I said getting upset again.
“Just let me explain Yuri! I didn’t want this to happen, she was just there and we were talking.” Andy tried again still holding onto my hand. I’d forgotten he was holding my hand and pulled out of his grasp.
“Enough! If I have to hear another word, I’m gonna jump out of this car myself!” I yelled.
“Fine! I won’t say anymore, you’re too stubborn to listen even! You’ve always been like that, selfish. That’s what you are!” Andy screamed at me.
I sat there stunned, tears started to stream down my face, I couldn’t stop them. He’d hurt me so much and now with those last words, I felt as if he’d slapped me in the face.
“I didn’t know you felt that way. You should have told me earlier, then you would have saved me from a broken heart. Andy, you killed what there was left of Yuri Ahn.” I said through my tears. “I really hope you’re happy.”
“I…” Andy trailed off as the car swerved off the road and went crashing through the trees.
“Andy!” I screamed and then all was black.
“Andy!” I screamed and woke up covered in sweat. I was breathing really hard and shaking, there were tears on my face, streaming down.
“Yuri! Dear God, what happened? Are you ok? Dong seng?” Tony oppa said as he ran into my room and rushed over to my bed. He held me as I shook and I cried into his arms.
“Tony oppa! Andy, he’s dead. I… he…it was…the car… crashed…” I sobbed, choking on the words.
“Yuri, shh, it was just a dream. Calm down baby girl, it’s okay, I’m here. Take it easy. Stop crying now, it’s ok.” Tony said calming me down. I managed to calm down and stopped crying as Kang Ta oppa came into the room and sleepily asked what was all thes screaming about.
“Sorry cuz. Yuri was just having a bad dream. She’s ok now. You can go back to sleep.” Tony oppa said, reassuring Kang Ta.
“Yuri? Are you ok? I heard you screaming something like ‘Andy’? Who’s Andy?” Kang Ta asked worriedly.
“It’s okay cuz. She’s fine, and it was probably some scary monster named Andy.” Tony said ushering him out of the room.
After he’d gone, I started to remember what I’d dreamt about.
“Oppa, did I really yell for Andy?” I asked, my hand instantly reaching for the silver necklace I was wearing that my silver promise ring was hanging on.
“Yes Yuri. You still having nightmare about him? Poor thing.” Tony oppa came over and hugged me again. “Yuri, he’s out of our lives now. That’s why we’re here. To start a new life. You have to forget about him.”
“I know oppa, it’s just, I can’t control my dreams you know. This one felt so real. I was there, on the night of when it happened.” I said, tears forming in my eyes again.
“I understand. As long as you know that it was a dream. Don’t forget, if you ever need to talk, I’m here ok?” Tony oppa said worriedly, getting up, “I’ll let you get back to sleep okay?”
“Thanks oppa.” I said as I lay my head down on the pillow as he left the room. I fell asleep the instant my head hit the pillow. I slept deeply without any dreams at all.
~Two days later~
Church had just finished and Tony, Hye Sung, Dong Wan, Min Woo, Brian, Hwan Hee and I had just walked out and were standing together on the busy sidewalk.
“Guys, where to?” Brian asked. “Going to meet up with the others?”
“Yeah, sure. Mi Yun said they’ll all be at Brian and Hwan Hee’s place.” Dong Wan oppa said.
“Ok, let’s go then.” Hwan Hee said grabbing my hand and leading me to his car.
~At Brian, Hwan Hee and Yoo Jin’s apartment~
“What you been up to while we were away?” Dong Wan asked Mi Yun as he kissed her when we walked into the apartment.
“Hey baby, nothing much. You guys really gota pity me.” Mi Yun said looking at us. “While you were away at church, those two love birds were getting all mushy and I was being sick.”
“Haha, actually Mi Yun, you and Dong Wan oppa ain’t much different.” Min Woo said.
A cushion flew across the room and hit Min Woo on the face. He pretended to fall over and Mi Yun sat there laughing.
While this was happening, I walked over to the balcony and went outside. I had not been feeling all too great ever since my dream episode a couple of days ago. I couldn’t get Andy out of my head. The truth was, I felt that I still loved him even though he hurt me so much.
“Go ahead Yuri, open it.” Andy said as he handed me a little blue box.
“It’s not my birthday Andy, and I’m pretty sure it’s not our anniversary. What’s this for?” I asked while opening the box. Inside was a beautiful silver ring. “Oh Andy, it’s beautiful.”
“Yuri, this ring is a symbol of a promise that I am willing to make to you. After we’ve both finished college, I’m gonna marry you. As long as you wear the ring, and I wear mine, we will always be together forever.” Andy said placing the ring in the palm of my hand. I saw that he was wearing the identical ring to the one on my finger, “Look at the inscription on the inside of the band”
I looked inside the beautiful ring. There was a tiny inscription written in there. “Andy © Yuri Forever” it read. “What does yours say?” I asked, putting the ring on.
“Mine says Yuri © Andy Forever” he said showing me.
“Andy, I love you so much! Thankyou for this, I will treasure it forever.” I said kissing him.
“Hey beautiful. What are you doing out here all alone?” Hwan Hee asked as he came from behind and wrapped his arms around me, leaning his chin on my shoulder.
I was startled out of my day dream and said, “Just needed some air.”
“Alright, Yuri, are you okay?” Hwan Hee turning me around to face him.
“Of course, why wouldn’t I be?” I asked.
“I don’t know, you just seemed less talkative.” He answered, looking worried.
“I’m fine Hwan Hee, just fine.” I said, putting my arms around his neck and kissed him. He quickly responded and it was a long time before we pulled apart. We stood there holding each other for a long time until Hye Sung came onto the balcony asking us to come inside.
We watched movies until 3am and then decided to crash. We stayed at Hwan Hee’s place because we were too tired to even get up. After many arguments of whether or not I should sleep on the floor, he finally decided that I had no choice and I was going to sleep in his bed.
“Hwan Hee oppa, you can’t sleep on the floor in your own bedroom. That’s just not right.” I said sitting on the floor.
“C’mon baby, just sleep in my bed.” He said tiredly pulling me up and pushing me towards his bed.
“Your bed is quite big, and I don’t sleep with my body spread out, so why can’t we both sleep in it?” I asked. I was feeling guilty because I didn’t want him to be kicked out of his own bed because of me.
“But, um… I don’t sleep all that straight. I have a tendency to fall off the bed while sleeping.” He looked at me sheepishly. “I might fall onto you if you’re on the floor.”
“But I don’t want you sleeping on the floor. I’m not going to sleep in here unless you sleep on the bed. C’mon, if you’re afraid of falling off, you can sleep on the other side. Near the wall.” I offered.
“Oh, alright, sure then. I’m too tired to argue.” He mumbled getting into the bed and I followed.
“Good night baby.” I said kissing him lightly.
“Mmm, night.” He said, falling instantly asleep. I rolled over and fell asleep as well.
I opened my eyes and looked around the white room. Tony oppa instantly awoke from sleeping in the chair next to my bed. I realized with horror that I was in a hospital room.
“Tony oppa!? Where am I?” I asked weakly, wanting to be sure.
“Hey Yuri. You finally woke up! Thank God! You’re in hospital dongseng. How are you feeling?” he asked holding my pale hand and looking at me worriedly.
“How long have I been out?” I asked.
“It’s been 5 days since the accident Yuri. I was thinking that you’d never come out of it.” My oppa said.
“Where’s omma and appa?” I asked looking around the room.
“They just stepped out for a little while. I’ll call them.” Tony oppa said reaching for his hand phone and dialing my parents.
“What… happened…to…um…to…Andy…” I stuttered when he had finished making the call.
“He was released a day ago. He had a broken arm and concussion. But he was a lot better off than you. I really thank God you came out of that coma. I was afraid you wouldn’t.” Tony oppa said gratefully.
I smiled weakly, “You know I never give up.”
“Yeah, that’s our Yuri. Strong. What happened that night? I heard from Eric that he saw you run out of the party crying.” Tony asked.
Slowly, with tears running down my face, I told him all that happened on the night of the party, “…And after that, I don’t remember anymore.”
“Oh Yuri. I didn’t know. That BASTARD! And to think I treated him like my own brother after the accident. I can’t believe he could still show his face around me. If I see him again, I’ll…” Tony said pacing angrily around the hospital room.
“I just couldn’t believe he would do that to me. I think he purposely tried to kill me or something. I mean, he was really mad and he kept saying that I was selfish.” I sobbed, “For the first time in my life I felt scared of my own boyfriend, oppa. Can you believe that? Scared of Andy.”
“No Yuri, I can see why. A guy like that does not deserve my little sister. I am going to protect you from him.” Tony said punching his right fist into his left hand determinedly.
“Oppa, I think I just can’t face him right now. I never want to see him again.” I said closing my eyes. “Can you please get me some water?”
“Sure.” My brother said as he got me a glass of water with a straw and helped me drink it.
After I’d had a drink, omma and appa rushed into the room.
“Yuri honey! Oh Thank God you’re awake!” my omma said as she kissed my forehead with tears in her eyes.
“How are you feeling Yuri?” my appa asked, “Do you want to eat anything? Tony, get your sister something to eat.”
“I’m okay omma and appa. Just glad to be awake. I feel a little bit weak, that’s all.” I said trying to smile.
“You just do your very best to get well. Andy has been asking for you. He said he was going to stop by around now actually.” Omma said squeezing me hand. My parents really loved Andy, he was like part of the family.
I heard her mention Andy’s name and I felt sick to the stomach. I turned to face the window, not looking at my parents or oppa.
“What’s wrong honey? He’s really been worried about you. Keeps on asking if you’ve woken up and comes in to see you everyday.” My omma said.
“Don’t mention that name around this family anymore omma. Yuri and I both don’t want anything to do with that guy anymore. He has treated my own dongseng like dirt and does not deserve to show his face around here anymore.” Tony oppa said angrily.
“Why? Tony, what happened? What did Andy do? ” appa asked, concerned.
“He…” Tony began, and then there was soft knock at the door to the room. There was total silence in the room and I realized that something was wrong.
I turned around slowly and saw Andy standing at the door with a sling on his arm and a small bandage on his forehead. He saw that I was awake and stared at me.
“Yuri, you’re awake. Thank God. I prayed everyday for you to wake up. I don’t know what I would have done if you’d never woken up.” Andy said quietly. He seemed to sense the tension in the air and looked around at my parents and Tony oppa.
I turned to face the wall once more. I couldn’t handle him being there, just seeing him standing there was too much for me and a tremendous sadness overcame and I started to cry again.
“Get out you bastard, you’re not welcome here. After what you did to her, do you think that I would let you anywhere near my sister?” Tony said walking towards Andy.
“Tony? What’s this all about?” my appa asked shocked at Tony’s language, “How can you talk to Andy like that? He’s your sister’s boyfriend.”
“Some boyfriend, cheating on her and then trying to kill her afterwards. I thought you were better than that Andy, I really did.” Tony said approaching Andy.
“I…I…” Andy stuttered, shocked that my oppa knew about what had happened.
“Just go. I never want to see you around her again. Leave our family alone. Go back to whoever it was that you thought was better than Yuri. We don’t need you around here.” Tony said angrily, giving Andy a hard push towards the door.
“I’m sorry Yuri! I really am! But if you’ll only let me explain…” Andy yelled as he was pulled out of the room by Tony.
That was the last time I ever saw Andy. I was crying so hard, my whole body was shaking and my omma and appa were distraught with not knowing what was going on. Tony oppa told me that he’d tried to call the house after I was discharged and also came to the house a few times, but Tony had made sure that he never got close to me. My heart ached so much, It had probably broken. I thought it would never heal.
I woke up with tears on my face and realized that I’d been crying again. Hwan Hee must have heard me because he woke up and saw the tears on my face.
“Baby, what’s wrong?” he asked me worriedly wiping the tears away with his shirt.
“Nothing, just a bad dream.” I said, “Just hold me Hwan Hee.”
He pulled me close and held me as I cried into his shirt.
“Something is seriously wrong Yuri, what has made you so upset? You can tell me you know?” he said as my sobs slowly subsided.
“I will, it’s just, not now okay?” I said looking up at him.
“Ok, I just hope you know that you can tell me anything. I really do care for you, and I’m here for you. I hate to see you like this. It worries me.” Hwan Hee said giving me a kiss.
“Oh baby, I don’t deserve you.” I said sobbing again, “I know you’re here, it’s just I’m a mess, I will tell you. Just, not right now.”
“I understand. But I’m here for you.” He said worriedly.
“I know” I whispered hugging him. He was so wonderful. But, could I tell him yet? I wasn’t sure.
That day, I had to wear dark glasses to cover my swollen eyes. Everyone else didn’t say anything except for Tony oppa. He never seemed to miss a thing. When I was walking with the others down the street to the shops holding Hwan Hee’s hand, Tony oppa came and said he needed to talk to me.
“I’ll be right back okay?” I said kissing Hwan Hee quickly and walking to catch up with my oppa.
“Yuri, you’ve been crying again. What happened?” my concerned oppa asked.
“I had another dream. This time, it was the scene in the hospital. I was crying when I woke up and Hwan Hee oppa heard me. He knows there’s something depressing me. I think I should tell him about… the… accident.” I said slowly, looking at Tony.
“Oh man, it looks like these dreams are going to bug you all the time now.” Tony said giving me a hug, “Yeah, you should tell Hwan Hee about all this. I mean, he’s you’re boyfriend now and I guess he deserves to know. It might help to get it all out of you. And I know he will be very understanding.”
“I thought so too. Yeah, I’ll tell him.” I said, “Thanks oppa.” I said as I went back to Hwan Hee.
In the evening, I told Hwan Hee I was ready to tell him what was bothering me and he suggested that we should go to the park across from his apartment. We sat on a bench looking out at the water.
I told him everything from start to end, leaving out the part about my feelings for Andy now. I was still unsure about all that.
He sat there quietly, looking at me and then pulled me close saying, “Oh, you poor baby. Yuri, no one should have to go through that.”
“You know, I just kept thinking to myself what did I do wrong to make him do something like that to me.” I said sadly. I had no more tears to cry, I’d been crying too much lately.
“You did nothing. He was the one who threw away a perfect girl. I can’t believe he did it too. He was cruel. But, if you ever need a shoulder to cry on, I’m here.” Hwan Hee said holding me.
“I know you are, and you are my comfort.” I said softly as I looked out over the moonlit lake. The moon was slowly rising over the lake. It was a perfect night.
“It may not seem like much, but I will always be here for you. Forever.” He said softly.
I was still confused, but his gentle voice made me truly believe in him.
~Back in LA~
Andy’s father had finally returned from his business trip to Japan. He was reclining on the couch reading the paper. Andy appeared at the door.
“Appa, I have something to ask of you.” Andy said as he slowly walked into the room.
“Yes Andy? What is it? Decided on what to do with you’re summer yet?” Mr Lee asked peering at his son over the top of the paper.
“I want to go to Korea for the summer. I can stay with cousin Min Woo oppa and Mi Yun. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind.” Andy explained his plans.
“Hmm, that sounds like you’ve thought it through. Actually, I was thinking of sending you there on a more permanent basis. In regards to university, you can study at ChunAn University, to finish your English major. You can go, but give it a while so we can work the arrangements out. This will be the best opportunity for you.” Andy’s appa said decidedly. He was a strict man who was well respected by his family and co-workers.
“Thanks appa.” Andy said walking out of the room, “You have no idea how grateful I am.” He said to himself as he walked back to his room.
Now he was really on his way to finding Yuri. He knew that it would not be easy to find her, but he wouldn’t stop trying. He would search every single college and university until he found her. He wasn’t going to give up. Going to college in the same country as Yuri seemed like an excellent idea. He was going to find her, there was no doubt about it. He lay down on his bed and twirled the silver promise ring on his forefinger while thinking of Yuri.
~One week later~
In the recording room of SM studios, I stood there looking at the list of songs that I would have to start to record.
“Wow, can I do it?” I thought to myself.
“Yuri, all set?” asked Woo Hyuk, adjusting the sound board. He was the guy who would be in charge of the recordings on the album that I was to release.
“Well, I haven’t done this before in my life.” I said nervously.
“You’ll be fine. Just go into that room, put on those head phones and let that beautiful voice out.” He said directing me.
“Ok. I guess, here I go.” I turned and hugged Hwan Hee, Hye Sung and Tony, who’d come with me.
“Go break a leg girl!” Hye Sung oppa said to me as I entered the recording booth.
I smiled at him and put on the headphones. My music lay in front of me and I was all set to start recording.
“Okay, the first song will be Born To Make You Happy, originally sung by Britney Spears. Get ready Yuri.” Woo Hyuk said as he started the music.
I started to sing and tried my hardest to put my all into it. Those voice coaching sessions really helped, I thought during a break in the song.
After a few more touch ups to the song, we’d finished and Woo Hyuk gave me the thumbs up sign.
“C’mon Yuri, let’s listen to it.” He said motioning to me to come into the other room.
“I hope it sounds ok.” I said shivering with excitement as Hwan Hee hugged me from behind.
“It sounds fantastic in here Yuri.” Tony oppa said smiling at me.
“Okay, here’s the finished product.” Woo Hyuk oppa said playing the song for us.
As I listened to the recording, I just couldn’t believe it. It was as much as I expected it to be. I was astounded. I couldn’t believe that I’d sounded like that.
“Damn, you have one fine voice. We didn’t even need to try it over and over. This is the orignal!” Woo Hyuk said looking at me.
“My first song! That was actually my first recorded song!” I shrieked with happiness and jumped up and down, hugging Woo Hyuk oppa, “Thankyou so much!”
“My pleasure to work with someone as talented as you.” He said just as happy as I was.
Then it was back into the recording room to record the rest of the songs. But of course, we couldn’t get through them all in one day. I barely finished two. I was completely ecstatic and happy. It was just such a wonderful feeling, I hoped it would last.
RING RING
“I’ll get it!” Mi Yun yelled as she rushed to get the phone, “Hey baby, when were you gonna come over?”
“Oh, um, Hi to you too Mi Yun.” Andy said, “Not every call is from you’re boyfriend you know.”
“Oh Andy oppa! So sorry! What you callin’ for? How’s everything over there?” Mi Yun asked blushing from embarrassment glad that her cousin couldn’t see her over the phone.
“That’s okay, everything is fine here. Guess what?” Andy said.
“What?” Mi Yun asked curiously.
“I’m coming to Korea!” Andy said excitedly.
“Really? Wow…that’s so damn cool.” Mi Yun said excitedly.
“I have something to ask you guys though, well you see, I’m going to be transferring to Chun An University and I was wondering… if you guys would mind you’re cousin crashing at you’re place. Well, not crashing, but just staying on for lodging.” Andy asked hopefully.
“Of course we wouldn’t mind! Min Woo oppa will be so happy. He has another guy to hang around. That’s great you’ll be coming. Anyway, when are you coming?” Mi Yun asked.
“In a couple of weeks. I have to get everything packed and arranged. But, I really can’t wait to see you guys!” Andy said happily.
“Yeah! Me too! Just call again with all your details.” Mi Yun replied.
“Alright, I will. Thanks again! Bye!” Andy said thankfully.
“No problems cuz. Bye!” Mi Yun said as she hung up the phone and went to tell her brother the good news.
~A couple of weeks later~
I was getting ready to launch my debut album. It was so exciting and I was really nervous. I kept thinking to myself, “What if the crowd hate me? What if I trip on stage?” It was a charity concert run by SM entertainment and I was the opening act.
“Hey Yuri, all set?” Hwan Hee asked as he came up to me backstage.
“Yes. I think so. I just hope everything goes well.” I said rubbing my hands together, “Did you see the guys from Shinhwa? I can’t believe they come on after me!” I said excitedly.
“You see, you’re all set to be star. Now, go knock em dead!” Hwan Hee said kissing me as the announcer said my name.
I walked onstage and smiled at the crowd. The music for my yet to be released debut single started and I got ready to sing. The song was called Keeping the Faith. I sang with all my heart and at the end there was a tremendous sound as the whole arena erupted in applause. There was whistling and cheers from all around. I couldn’t believe it. It was really happening. I quickly bowed and walked off stage as Shinhwa’s track started to play. There were cheers all around once more.
I was only one step off stage when Hwan Hee swept me off my feet and kissed me, “Oh baby, you were so damn good! You’ve finally done it!” he said totally elated.
“Thankyou so much Hwan Hee! I am so happy! I just couldn’t be happier!” I cried, more happy than I’d ever been.
“Yuri dongseng! You were excellent!” Tony oppa said giving me a huge bear hug, “I knew you could do it! You looked so good! You sang so well too!”
“Thankyou oppa!” I said hugging him back.
“The others are all sitting out there waiting for your final performance but I couldn’t wait! I just had to congratulate you first!” my oppa said excitedly.
I was so happy. This was so exciting! My first performance went really well! I was also the closing act for the concert. I couldn’t wait until they heard that song because it was my favourite song of all. Even though it was not one of my original songs, I loved it so much that Mr Soo Man agreed to put it on the album. It was the remake of Born To Make You Happy originally by Britney Spears.
“Ladies, gentlemen and distinguished guests. The last act is the same talented young lady that we heard at the beginning of this event. She is only 18 years old and is our newest addition to the SM entertainment family. Please welcome back, YURI AHN!” the concert announcer boomed, there was much applause and I slowly walked out onto the stage.
“Thankyou everyone, you’ve been a really great audience to me. The next song I’ll be singing is one of my personal favourites. Britney Spears sang it a few years ago, I loved it so much that I just had to sing it. I am performing it with an acoustic accompaniment. Hope y’all like it!” I said smiling at the crowd and getting ready to sing. There were cheers all around once more, the loudest was from my friends sitting in the front of the open air auditorium. Hye Sung oppa and Tony oppa standing up and wolf whistling.
“Oh yeah
I’m sitting here alone up in my room
And thinking about the times that we’ve been through
Oh my love
I’m looking at a picture in my head
Trying my best to understand
I really wanna know what we did wrong
With a love that felt so strong
If only you were here tonight
I know that we could make it right
I don’t know how to live without your love
I was born to make you happy
‘Cause you’re the only one within my heart
I was born to make you happy
Always and forever you and me
That’s the way our lives should be, yeah
I don’t know how to live without your love
I was born to make you happy…”
During the second verse, I drifted off into a dream like state and suddenly thought I saw Andy standing at the back of the crowds of people. He stood there with tears in his eyes. I had tears in my eyes too. The words of the song depicted my feelings. “Born to make you happy” was the song that I’d given Andy on his 19th birthday. I’d sung it to him as one of our other friends had played the guitar. I still remembered that night.
“I’d do anything
I’d give you my world
I’d wait forever to be your girl
Just call out my name
And I will be there
Just to show you how much I care.”
I’d drifted into a dreamy state again and once again could see Andy still standing at the back of the crowds, this time with tears running down his face. A tear ran down my own face as I sang those words.
“I don’t know how to live without your love
Cuz you’re the only one within my heart
Always and forever you and me
That’s the way our lives should be, yeah
I was born to make you happy…”
The entire auditorium erupted in applause and everyone was standing. I smiled and bowed to the crowd saying, “Thankyou, you’ve truly been a great audience. Please thank my guitarist and also all the musicians and back up singers too. Thankyou so much. The children have definitely benefited from all your generosity. Thanks so much for being here!” I bowed again and walked off stage. As I reached the stage back stairs, I felt strange. I suddenly remembered I’d thought I’d seen Andy as I was singing. I turned around a strained to see to the back of the still standing crowd. I couldn’t see back that far due to the thousands of people standing.
“No, he couldn’t be here could he? Don’t be stupid. You’re just dreaming again.” I thought to myself.
I was enveloped by hugs from all my friends as I stepped off the stage. I could see the joy on all their faces. Mi Yun, Yoo Jin and Brian looked as if they’d really been touched by my last song and Kang Ta even had a few tears in his eyes. I was so happy to see that I’d appealed to the emotions and touched my friends. This showed that my feelings were depicted through my singing. Exactly what I’d wanted.
“Let’s go and celebrate!” Hye Sung oppa yelled happily, “ Yuri, you’re the best! By the way, are we invited to the after party?”
“Sure, I guess you can come, as my friends of course. I don’t see why not.” I said smiling at all my friends, “Anyway, you’re dad will be there, so I’m sure he won’t mind.”
“Yuri, all you’re dreams have been answered!” Tony oppa said giving me a quick hug.
“Hey baby, congratulations! I’m so happy for you!” Hwan Hee said wrapping his arms around me, “You really are the star that you deserve to be.”
“Thankyou. I’m so happy Hwan Hee. Thanks for being here too! It makes this even more special to me.” I said, kissing him. We stayed like that for quite awhile, forgetting our surroundings. Oh dear God, don’t let this night ever stop. It’s too wonderful to be true! I’m here with a wonderful guy who I love and also, I’ve just made my debut performance! All my dreams have come true.
“Yuri! You’re performance touched me so much! You’re beautiful voice!” Yoo Jin said as she and Kang Ta walked up.
“Oh Yoo Jin unnie, thanks so much for being here!” I said. Kang Ta and Yoo Jin were really a hot item these days. They were the perfect couple.
“Yuri unnie, thankyou for inviting me to the after party.” Mi Yun said holding onto Dong Wan oppa. “I love Shinhwa! They are so damn fine! Hehe.” She giggled, “Of course, not as much as you.” She added quickly looking at Dong Wan.
“Haha, I know how crazy you are for them. But yeah Yuri, you were great!” Dong Wan said.
“Thanks…” I started to say when Min Woo interrupted me.
“Hey guys, enough of this. It’s time we got going to the party! Yuri, not to stop them complimenting you, but, I’m dying to get to this party.” Min Woo said excitedly.
“It’s okay Min Woo oppa, I’d like to go too. Let’s go guys.” I said, looking at my friends.
After that, we all set off to the party on our own. It was to be held at a special reserved hotel. Hwan Hee and I went in the limousine the SM company provided for me. It all felt so surreal to me, riding in a limo with my boyfriend to the after party of a concert that I’d just sung in. Not to mention, the concert consisted of singers that I really admired, like Shinhwa. “This can’t be real” I thought as I leaned my head on Hwan Hee’s shoulder as we drove towards the party.
“There she is.” Andy thought to himself as he saw Yuri, dressed in a silver sparkled black top and shiny flared jeans, “She’s alone. Here’s my chance.”
Then, all these people came out nowhere and enveloped her in hugs. “Damn”, Andy said as he stood behind the far stage entrance.
Yuri was being hugged and adored by all her friends. “She seems so happy here. With new friends and all.” Andy thought to himself.
A tall, good-looking Korean guy with blonde hair came over to Yuri at that moment and wrapped his arms around her. “Damn, she has a boyfriend already.” Andy said disappointedly. He saw her kiss him and watched their embrace with jealousy. “She’s still supposed to be with me. We promised each other to be together forever.” He thought.
“I can’t believe I’ve lost her. How stupid was I? Making that one mistake… I should have tried harder. I can’t believe I let such a perfect person go. She was my soul mate. We were meant to be together. But now, she’s with that other guy. And he has the looks and it seems like he loves her a lot. Man, I’ve seriously screwed up, big time. How can I get her back now?” thought Andy totally lost in all his thoughts.
He suddenly looked up and saw Mi Yun and Min Woo amongst Yuri’s group of friends. What? They were her friends? What a small world. He couldn’t believe it. It seemed that God was giving him a second chance. He was about to walk up to the group and surprise them, but he also knew that he would be spoiling Yuri’s glory. He knew that he would not be able to see her wonderful smile if he’d suddenly shown up while she was basking in all the happiness that she deserved. “I can’t do that to her right now.” Andy thought.
On the way here from the airport Andy’d seen posters all over the city and at the airport advertising the SM entertainment group’s charity concert called Give A Little Hope. It was for the children in child labour all over the world. All proceeds would go to help them go to school instead of working for employers who exploited them. Andy had seen Yuri’s photo on the side and had been totally shocked. She was a singer now? Was this the same Yuri Ahn? He’d asked the taxi to drop him at the concert and even though the concert was nearly over, he’d paid in full to get in. He came in just when Yuri was starting to sing the very song she’d sung to him for his 19th birthday.
“That was about one and a half years ago.” Andy thought, reminiscing. He smiled remembering her smile, the way her hair was smoothly brushed back and tucked behind her ears, the dress she wore, her beautiful eyes, her voice, her laugh. Then, his smile turned into a frown as he’d seen her face while she was singing the song tonight. Her face was so sad, there were tears in her eyes, and in his too. She’d seemed as if she were looking right at him, but he was unsure. The way she’d sung that song had touched his heart so deeply. She was so hurt and he’d caused it. He had to make it up to her in some way.
But first, he had to go see his cousins. They didn’t even know he was in the country yet. He hadn’t told them he’d be coming this soon. He wanted to surprise them, but now he had no where to stay seeing as they’d just gone to the after party too. I guess I’ll just have to wait for them, and he called a taxi.
Mi Yun and Min Woo returned to their house at about 4am the next morning. They were talking and laughing about the events of the whole night and did not realize that they had a visitor. They did not see Andy until they nearly tripped over his sleeping body on their front step.
“Ouch!” Andy said sleepily as he rubbed his side and got up.
“Andy oppa! What are you doing here?!” Mi Yun asked, totally shocked.
“Andy! We thought you’d be coming next week!” Min Woo said, just as shocked as his sister.
“I decided to come a little early, just to surprise you, but I didn’t know you wouldn’t be home.” Andy said tiredly, getting up.
“Come in! You should’ve called us. We were out at this awesome party.” Min Woo said unlocking the door.
“Nah, it’s ok. I haven’t slept like that for quite awhile. You got quite a comfortable front step there cousins.” Andy joked as he walked in and threw himself down on the couch.
“It’s great to have you back cuz. Haven’t seen you in ages!” Mi Yun said giving her cousin a quick hug as she went to get a room ready for him.
“It’s great to be back. I can start to call your place home sweet home once again.” Andy said contentedly.
~Later that day~
I was on the phone to Mi Yun, having a girly chat with her. She was so excited about meeting Shinhwa and kept on talking about them. Mi Yun and Yoo Ji were my two closest female friends in Korea. I didn’t know very many Korean girls. Only those two and a few of the SM family and crew.
“Kam sa ham ni da Yuri unnie, I enjoyed that party SO much! You’re the best friend I could ever have!” Mi Yun gushed for the thousandth time.
“No problems Mi Yun, they were pretty hot weren’t they?” I said referring to the very gorgeous guys from Shinhwa.
“Totally. Anyway, I think it’s time I’d better go, Min Woo oppa will kill me if he walks past again and finds I’m on the phone again. Not to mention, I better go see what my cousin has gotten up to.” Mi Yun said finally calming down from the excitement of meeting Shinhwa the previous night.
“Oh, okay then. You’re cousin? I didn’t know that you had a cousin here.” I said.
“Oh, he just arrived yesterday. He’s from the states, like you and Tony oppa. You should meet up with him soon when we go out. He’s here for study. Parents carted him off here. Rich folks you know.” Mi Yun said.
“Oh, I see. Well, I’m sure it’ll be great to meet him.” I said just as there was a yell from Tony oppa’s room.
“Mi Yun! Can you come here for a sec.” Tony oppa yelled from his room.
“Okay, be right there.” I yelled back to him.
“Listen Mi Yun, I gota go now coz…” I started to say but I heard laughter from her end of the phone.
“Hahaha, my god, hahaha, man, are you okay?…” Mi Yun said from the other line, distractedly.
“Mi Yun?” I said wondering what was making her laugh so much.
“Hahaha, sorry unnie, my cousin just tripped down the stairs and sort of landed on his face. Hahaha!” she laughed hysterically, “I’m totally loosing it here. Andy oppa! Are you okay?”
“Listen Mi Yun, I gota go now okay? Tony oppa is like getting impatient. Talk to you later”, I interrupted as she was talking.
“Um, okay unnie, see you soon okay? Mi Yun said quickly.
“Yeah, soon. Seeya.” I said as I placed the phone back on it’s stand and went to find out what my oppa wanted.
“Andy oppa! Are you okay?” Mi Yun repeated as she hung up the phone with Yuri and rushed to see if her cousin was okay.
Andy, who was sitting on the bottom steps now was laughing hysterically too.
“Yeah Mi Yun, I’m all cool. Just a little fall that’s all. Man, how clumsy am I? And now your friend thinks I’m a dumb ass as well. Why’d you have to tell her?” Andy said rubbing his nose, which had turned a little red from the fall. He had had a feeling that it was Yuri who was on the phone to his cousin and wanted to maybe hear what they were saying. He missed her so much.
“Hahaha, no, Yuri unnie is very cool. She is a gasoo you know? That’s why we were at the party yesterday. Andy oppa! I got to meet Shinhwa! My all time most favourite singers in the entire world!” Mi Yun said excitedly.
“I can see how much you love them from your room, covered in their posters. Wow, she’s a singer? How did she come to singing?” Andy asked curiously, wanting to know more about what his “girlfriend” had been up to while she was here. He still referred to Yuri as his girlfriend in his mind. Anyway, they had never really broken up.
“Oh, that. Well, our friend Hye Sung’s dad’s friend heard her sing and well, yeah. He pretty much signed her up to SM entertainment on the spot. His dad’s friend is the manager of SM entertainment. So, it was very fortunate for her.” Mi Yun said walking over to the couch and sitting down.
“I see. Is she goodlooking?” Andy asked mischievously.
“I knew you were going to ask that oppa. Well, I think she is. But she’s not for you. She already has a boyfriend. And they are so cute together. So you have no chance.” Mi Yun said as she switched the television on.
“Who does my cousin have no chance with?” Min Woo asked as he walked into the room carrying a big bowl of chips.
“Min Woo oppa! Just in time, yummy, give me some. I was just saying that Andy oppa has no chance with Yuri unnie because she and Hwan Hee are the inseparable couple. Besides Dong Wannie oppa and I of course.” Mi Yun said smiling.
“Hey, why would I have no chance? With my good looks and charming personality, she’s sure to fall head over heels in love.” Andy teased throwing a cushion at Mi Yun.
“Hahaha, yeah right cousin. Keep right on dreaming. But Mi Yun’s right. Those two are inseparable. They are so good together.” Min Woo said referring to his two friends.
“Ok ok, enough of this. What are we gonna be watchin today?” Andy said changing the subject and looking at the pile of videos stacked besides the coffee table.
“Ever after!” Mi Yun said jumping up and grabbing the video.
The other two guys groaned as she inserted the video and pushed play.
“Damn, they must be a hot item according to Min Woo oppa and Mi Yun. This Hwan Hee guy looks like to be my biggest problem at the moment.” Andy thought jealously as the movie started.
“Thanks for the ride Woo Hyuk oppa.” I said as I climbed out of the car. It’d been a long day at the studios discussing the release. I was tired and wanted to just have a nice relaxing shower and fall into bed. But I’d promised Hwan Hee that I’d go to his house to stay the night after I’d finished up and watch videos with him.
“No problems. Enjoy you’re day off tomorrow! Take a rest, you deserve it. Bye!” Woo Hyuk said as he drove off.
I slowly walked up to Hwan Hee’s apartment door and pushed the bell.
It opened and Hwan Hee stood there looking exceptionally gorgeous in his black short sleeve shirt and baggy pants.
“Hey baby. You looked tired, come on in.” he said pulling me inside and enveloping me in a long kiss, “How was your day?”
“Not too bad, we finished the final touch ups on the album. You know, choosing which pictures should be used. I need a shower right now. Do you mind?” I asked placing my bag down beside the couch.
“Sure, go ahead. You know where everything is.” Hwan Hee said, “I’ll get you a towel.”
“Thanks baby. Where’s Brian and Yoo Jin?” I asked looking around and realizing that we were the only ones in the apartment.
“Brian is out with a new girl he met and Yoo Jin’s with Kang Ta.” He said as he handed me a towel.
“Okay.” I said going into the bathroom with the change of clothes I’d brought along.
“Ah, that’s so much better!” I said as I came out of the bathroom after my shower, rubbing my wet hair with a towel.
“Okay, now that you’re out, what do you want to watch?” Hwan Hee asked.
“Anything baby. I don’t mind.” I said finishing drying my hair and starting to comb it.
“Yuri, come here.” He said looking at me.
“What?” I said coming over and sitting on the couch with him. He grabbed my hand that held the comb and took it out of my hands.
“Here, I’ll do it for you. You just sit there.” Hwan Hee said starting to comb my long hair, “It’s so beautiful Yuri. I love your hair.”
“Hmm, so it’s only the hair that you love hey?” I said slyly as he finished combing it.
“Yeah. Only the hair.” He said mischievously, I thumped him with a cushion. We ended up in a minor pillow fight. No feathers flying, just a few disorderly cushions lying about the room. He got me on the couch, cornered with no cushions in sight.
“Hwan Hee oppa! I’m sorry, you know I didn’t mean it.” I said sheepishly in defense. He knew he had won.
He grabbed me and started to tickle me. Being very ticklish, I couldn’t stop giggling. I tried to tickle him back, but he was unmoving. I don’t understand why most guys are like bricks when it comes to tickling.
“Stop! Really! I can’t stand it! I give up! You win, you win!” I pleaded helplessly as he was about to advance for another round of mad tickling.
“Okay just this time.” He said coming towards me anyway and giving me a long kiss, “I love you Yuri Ahn. You and I are meant to be.” He whispered into my ear.
“Sarang hae yo.” I returned, kissing him again. At that moment, I knew that I was saying what was in my heart. It was how I truly felt at that precise moment. Hwan Hee loved me and I was finally happy.
At that moment, Brian walked in and saw us making out.
“Um, opps, sorry guys.” He said sheepishly, not knowing what to do.
“That’s okay Brian oppa. Why are you home so early?” I asked, pushing Hwan Hee off me.
“Yeah, weren’t you supposed to be out with some hot chick from America?” Hwan Hee said annoyed as he got up.
“Well, yeah. But, she had to leave early. So, I guess I had to crash your little party guys. Mee ahn.” Brian said looking sheepish again.
“No, it’s okay. We can watch.a movie together then.” I said sitting up.
So it was a quiet night in watching movies with my boyfriend and his best friend. I was so happy to be able to relax finally after a hectic schedule. I wanted to thoroughly enjoy my day off because like Mr Soo Man had said, day’s off were not easy to get. Little did I know that my day off would not turn out to be all that I’d expected.
~Yuri’s day off work~
“Baby, better get up. We’re meeting the others in half an hour.” I said in the morning as I poked my head into Hwan Hee’s room.
I was shocked to find no one on the bed. My eyes followed the trail of sheets and blankets to the floor where my sleeping boyfriend was curled up.
I giggled and said, “Hwan Hee baby, if you really prefer the floor, you should have said something. I could’ve slept in your nice big bed.”
He did not stir, so I walked over and threw off his blankets. “Get up baby” I said kissing his cheek and going over to pull open his curtains.
“Mmm, five my more minutes omma. Just five more minutes.” He mumbled, waving an arm about. He still hadn’t opened his eyes.
“What? I’m your omma now am I?” I said looking at his sprawled figure on the floor beside his bed, “Brian, what am I going to do?”
“Don’t worry, this’ll fix him” Brian said smiling as he walked into the room with a tray of ice. He walked to the bed and slid some of the ice cubes down Hwan Hee’s T-shirt.
“Argh! Cold! So cold!” Hwan Hee yelled as he jumped up wide awake, the ice cubes falling to the ground from under his shirt.
“You see? I knew that’d work.” Brian said grinning at me, “Hwan Hee, aren’t you ashamed of yourself? Your own girlfriend has to wake you up in the morning, like your omma. Not to mention you called her omma!”
“Sorry baby, I’m obviously not a morning person.” Hwan Hee said to me.
“It’s okay. Just don’t call me your omma again.” I said starting to go out of the room, “Hurry up. 20 more minutes and we’re leaving!”
~The Lee house~
“So, I’m finally going to meet these friends of yours huh?” Andy said drinking a cup of hot coffee while looking around at his two cousins who were having breakfast with him.
“Yeah. Our friends are the best.” Mi Yun said happily, “I’m sure you’ll like them.”
“He’s sure to. Andy is the best! How could anyone not like him?” Min Woo said looking up, “It’s a pity that they’re no girls that are available in our group though. They’re all taken. Even my lil sis here, which I find quite surprising.”
Mi Yun swatted him with the newspaper, “Hey, at least I’m not like you. I’ve at least got a boyfriend. Look at you! Growing old with no one to love you.”
“And how do you know I don’t have someone loving me?” Min Woo said mysteriously.
“Well, I haven’t seen any evidence. Andy oppa, how about you? I heard you had a girlfriend yeah? Where is she?” Mi Yun asked.
“Me? Oh yeah. Well, she’s on vacation now. She moved away though, to another country. So…” Andy trailed off, not wanting to tell his cousins the whole story just yet.
“Oh, poor oppa. You must miss her heaps huh? I heard it’d been going on for like 2 years. That’s really sad.” Mi Yun said sympathetically, “Do you see her anymore?”
“Well, not recently, I hope to soon, very soon. But um, didn’t you guys say we had to meet these friends of yours at 10.30? It’s sort of 10.25 right now.” Andy said changing the subject.
“Whoops! Damn, guys, let’s go! Hye Sung oppa’s gonna kill us!” Mi Yun said jumping up and running to get her bag.
Andy thought to himself carefully, “This is my chance. I’m finally going to get to see her after all this time. What will she say? Will she be happy? I can’t screw this up. Don’t forget, she has a boyfriend already. I don’t care. Yuri, I love you so much…always…”
~Hye Sung’s place~
“Hye Sung oppa! An nyung!” I said hugging him as we walked in the door.
“Hey guys! Glad you made it on time.” Hye Sung said cheerfully as he shut the door.
“Where’s Min Woo and Mi Yun?” Hwan Hee asked curiously, “They late?”
“Yes. As usual. Man, I should tell them that we were meeting at 10. Maybe then they would have come at 10.30. Anyway, you guys just relax. When they get here, we can all drive down to the beach. It’s a wonderful day!” Hye Sung said looking out the window at the beautiful clear sky.
“Beautiful day to be going down to the beach.” Dong Wan said going out onto the balcony.
“I love summer!” Yoo Jin said lying on the couch with her head on Kang Ta’s lap.
“Nah, I prefer winter.” I said.
“Yeah, me too. I guess it’s a brother, sister thing. Or maybe it’s because we’re cold blooded. Haha” Tony oppa said.
“Hey, you may be cold blooded, but I sure ain’t.” I said disagreeing.
“Yuri’s not cold blooded. She’s nice and warm.” Hwan Hee said wrapping his arms around me.
“Man, when ARE those three going to get here?” Hye Sung oppa said pacing the floor and looking at the clock. It was already close to 11.
~Minutes later~
DING DONG DING DONG…
“Finally!” Andy could hear a voice say just inside the door.
“Man, he sounds mad.” Mi Yun said uncomfortably.
“Where have you been?!” a tall Korean guy with dyed brown hair said opening the door and glaring at the three people standing outside. You could tell that he was a guy who hated when people were late.
“Hye Sung oppa! We were caught in the traffic.” Min Woo said hurriedly, “But we’re here now, so it’s all okay.”
“Alright, alright. Come on in, everyone’s waiting.” Hye Sung said ushering them in.
“Hey everyone! We have to introduce you all to someone, our cousin!” Min Woo said as he came into the living room, Andy following after his two cousins and Hye Sung.
He walked into the living room and looked around. There were quite a few faces he could not recognize. But he vaguely remembered seeing most of them on the night of Yuri’s performance. A girl with short, burgundy dyed hair lying on the couch with her head on the lap of a guy with dark hair. Another guy with short blonde tipped spikey hair, sitting on the floor flicking through a magazine. A tall, tanned guy that Andy just recognized as his cousin’s boyfriend. He’d seen many pictures of him around her room. Then all of a sudden, he saw her. His beautiful Yuri standing on the opposite side of the room wearing a purple T-shirt and jeans. She had her hair half up and he could see that she wore a silver necklace with a ring on it. The ring he had given her! Their eyes met at the exact moment and Andy saw her mouth open in shock.
“Oh dear God. Andy?” she said in a whisper.
“This is our cousin Andy from the states. He’s come here to study.” Min Woo said, not hearing Yuri’s whisper.
“An nyung.” Andy said not taking his eyes off Yuri.
“What are you doing here?” An angry voice said. It was Tony oppa.
“I’m here to study oppa. Haven’t seen you in a long time.” Andy said, staying calm.
“What? I don’t get this. You know Andy?” Mi Yun said looking at Tony confusedly.
“I asked you before, why are you here? You shouldn’t be here!” Tony said, starting to fume.
“I had to see her oppa. You didn’t let me explain to her what happened!” Andy said firmly, “She has to know the whole story.”
“She knows! She doesn’t need a guy like you. You betrayed her!” Tony said moving towards Andy.
“I didn’t! I would never do anything to hurt her! Yuri?! You have to believe that!” Andy said looking at Yuri with pleading eyes.
Before anything else could happen, punches were being thrown and the whole place was thrown into confusion.
“It can’t be.” I thought staring at the guy who had just come into the apartment with Mi Yun and Min Woo. But it was, Andy. I couldn’t believe that it was really Andy. I didn’t say anything. I couldn’t say a thing. I was in shock.
I could see what was going on. Mi Yun was confused at how Tony oppa had reacted to seeing Andy for the first time. It was all going so fast. All of a sudden, I could see Andy pleading to me, “I didn’t! I would never do anything to hurt her! Yuri?! You have to believe that!” and then, the fight had started. Tony and Andy, struggling and fighting. They were both strong and I knew that it was a hopeless fight. They wouldn’t stop until one of them was unconscious or dead. I’m not sure that they minded which. I had to do something, before it was too late.
“Stop it! Stop it!” Yoo Jin yelled, standing back as they threw punches, some missing.
Mi Yun was hugging Dong Wan, not wanting to look at the fight.
“Tony oppa! Andy oppa! Please stop fighting!” I yelled as I moved forward.
“Yuri! Don’t go anywhere near them! You’ll get hurt!” Hwan Hee said pulling me back.
“I have to stop it Hwan Hee! They’ll kill each other!” I said pulling out of his grasp and running into the fight. I tried to get between them and at that moment, Tony and Andy both threw out a punch at each other, missed and hit me, one in the neck and the other in the chin.
I felt as if someone had cut off my air supply. I tried to breath but no air came in. I suddenly felt really dizzy and weak and collapsed on the floor. I could see everyone rush towards me.
“Yuri! Yuri! Oh God! Yuri! Can you hear me dongseng?” Tony oppa yelled frantically, shaking me. I saw his concerned face bending over me along with Andy and the others. Then, all of a sudden, everything went black.
“Andy? Hwan Hee? Why did you bring me here?” I asked looking at them.
I was standing in a beautiful white, sparkling surrounding with the two guys facing me wearing identical white suits.
“We brought you here…”Hwan Hee started,
“…to ask you one question.” Andy finished off.
“What question?” I asked slowly walking towards them.
“You must choose.” Hwan Hee said.
“Between the two of us.” Andy said.
“What do you mean?” I said, confused and still walking towards them.
“Our hearts only have you Yuri. But which one of us is in yours?” They asked simultaneously.
“I…don’t know. I love you both.” I said reaching out to them. Only then did I realize I was dressed in a pure white dress.
“You must choose Yuri.” Hwan Hee said again.
“You can’t love us both.” Andy added, “You must be fair to the both of us.”
“But I…” I held Andy’s hand in my right hand and Hwan Hee’s in my left. “I can’t make up my mind. I’m confused.”
“Try Yuri. We need you to make up your mind.” Hwan Hee said turning towards me.
“Oh, but oppas, this place is so beautiful. Why can’t we just enjoy it here and forget about everything else?” I said looking around at the beautiful landscape. Everything was pearly white and shone in the soft whiteness of the atmosphere.
“You can’t stay here Yuri. You must go back.” Andy said looking at me sadly.
“There are people there who love you and are waiting for you.” Hwan Hee said agreeing.
“But are you both coming with me?” I asked curiously, feeling a sort of sadness.
“Of course, we are waiting for you. Like everyone else.” Andy said.
“We will wait for you until you return.” Hwan Hee said.
“Okay then. Is Tony oppa there too?” I asked wondering why everyone was waiting for me.
“Yes of course.” Andy said, “He’s very worried about you.”
“But why? I’ve only been gone an hour.” I said innocently.
“No you haven’t Yuri. You’ve been gone longer than that.” Hwan Hee said sadly.
“It’s time you went back.” Andy said letting go of my hand.
“Yes, it is. Time for you to go.” Hwan Hee said letting go of my other hand.
“Don’t forget Yuri, we’re waiting for you.” They both said as they walked off, leaving me standing there.
I watched their white backs until I couldn’t see them anymore. I knew that I had to go back. Everyone was waiting for me…
“Yuri?” Hwan Hee asked as Yuri’s hand started to move in his.
“She’s waking up!” Andy said rushing to the other side of the bed from the window where he’d been standing. He looked at her sadly, lying there on the hospital bed pale as a ghost with a brace around her neck and a large fading bruise on her chin.
“Water!” I gasped as she stirred a little. Andy hurriedly held a cup with a straw to my lips.
“Yuri? Can you hear me?” Hwan Hee asked standing up and holding onto my hand harder than ever.
“Hwan Hee? Where am I?” I asked opening her eyes slowly, looking around.
“You’re in hospital Yuri. Don’t you remember what happened?” Andy asked from the other side of the bed.
I slowly turned her head towards him, “Andy oppa? What are you doing here? …Ouch!…”
“Don’t move your head baby. The doctor said that you need to keep your neck still for another couple of days.” Hwan Hee said softly.
“I don’t think she remembers.” Andy said looking at Hwan Hee.
“Remember? What should I remember? How long have I been here?” I asked weakly.
“You don’t remember the fight? You were hurt Yuri, you’ve been unconscious for nearly a week.” Andy said.
“A week? It can’t have been that long.” I said, unbelievingly.
“It’s been a week, baby. My poor baby.” Hwan Hee said kissing my forehead. I looked up into his face and saw a huge purple bruise around his left eye.
“Oh Hwan Hee, are you okay? How did that happen?” I asked touching the bruised skin softly with my fingertips.
“It’s okay. Andy explained what happened to me after he punched me.” Hwan Hee said forcing himself to grin so as not to alarm his girlfriend, “I finally listened. Here, I’ll give you two some time to talk.”
“We sort of got into a little fight yesterday. I explained to him what happened at the party. And now it’s your turn.” Andy said determinedly watching as Hwan Hee left the room.
“What? The party?” I said looking at him.
“Yes, you remember you walked into the room when that girl was kissing me?” Andy asked.
“Yes.” I breathed softly.
“Well, what happened was, I knew her from ages ago. Our parents knew each other from a long time ago.” He continued, “She saw me at the party and we started talking. I sort of realized that she was a little drunk. She told me that she’d broken up with her boyfriend a few days before. I guess that’s why she was drunk. I was listening to her and then all of a sudden, she was all over me. I had no idea what was going on. Then you came and saw us. I really tried to tell you about all this, but you wouldn’t listen. I was really upset because you just refused to listen to me and was really angry that I didn’t look where I was driving and crashed. I didn’t mean to hurt you Yuri. Really. I would never do that.”
“Andy, I know. I’m so sorry.” I said sadly, with tears in my eyes.
“It’s okay. I just had to tell you the truth. Your brother wouldn’t let me see you at all after that. I tried and tried.” He said holding my hand.
“It’s my fault. I should have listened. I was too stubborn.” I said, tears beginning to form in my eyes.
“No. It’s okay. The past is the past Yuri. I really love you. I just want you to know that I would never hurt you intentionally.” He said with emotion in his voice.
“I know. But… I’m…Hwan Hee…he…” I said, not knowing how to say it. How could I tell him that I still cared for him but couldn’t be with him?
“I understand. You and him are together now. I know. But I would be lying if I didn’t say I was not jealous.” Andy said sadly.
“I’m so sorry. I thought you really left me. I kept wondering what I did wrong. I was really really heartbroken.” I said, squeezing his hand, “Then, I came here. Tony oppa said I could start afresh. New friends, a new life. Forget about the past. I met Hwan Hee and he was just perfect. But, I would also be lying if I said I didn’t think of you. I still have dreams.”
“That’s good enough. I know you can’t leave him. I don’t want you to do that. But, you won’t push me away?” he asked, looking into my eyes.
“Of course not.” I said sadly, “I don’t want you to go.”
“I will always love you Yuri. I will always be here for you. You must remember that.” Andy said softly.
“I will always love you too. Right now, I’m confused. I am torn between you and Hwan Hee. You are both too good for me. I don’t know what to do.” I said, tears coming into my eyes.
“It’s okay Yuri. I can wait. But as you know, you must choose sooner or later. I think that time will show you who it is that you really want. And both of us must just wait for that and accept whatever decision you make. You still wear the ring I gave you. I still have mine. I hope you still remember what that means. We will always be together forever. I will be here for you forever.” Andy said consoling me.
I closed my eyes and prayed, “Lord, please help me. What do I do? I can’t love two guys at once. You gave us one perfect person for each human on earth, who is it for me?”
~A couple of weeks later~
I had fully recovered and was right into launching my album release. It was Friday and I’d just finished my video for Keeping the Faith. It had taken two days to complete and I was dead tired. The album’s release would be on Monday. I was so excited and also worried about what the public’s reaction to my music would be. The single had done really well so far. But still, people can like one song, but listen to the album and think that it wasn’t good.
“Yuh bo sae yo.” I said answering my hand phone as it started to ring.
“Tony oppa! I’m all done. Yeah, you can come and pick me up now.” I said, glad to hear the voice of my brother. He had become increasingly worried over me after the fight. I’d told him that it was okay. I was fine, but I think he still felt guilty for what had happened. It was definitely not his fault. Also, I’d explained the situation of the party to him earlier. He hadn’t been happy, but I knew he only needed time. He really like Andy a lot before all of this. They were always like brothers. Looking after me in their own ways.
“Yuri, I’ll pick you up in ten minutes. Wait with someone before I get there. I don’t want you alone.” He said quickly.
“Gwen chan ah. I’ll be fine. There are plenty of people here. I’ll wait for you in the foyer. You worry too much, an nyung.” I said hanging up.
Ten minutes later, my brother’s new Mercedes pulled up infront of the studios. I ran over and got in.
“Hey oppa! Where are we going tonight?” I asked as I buckled my seatbelt.
“Everyone will be heading over to Dong Wan’s place. He’s having a huge party. It’s sort of a round off to the end of summer.” Tony oppa said driving along the streets carefully.
“I can’t believe summer is nearly over. I won’t be going to college after it though. That’s sort of sad really. But, then again, I’ll be real busy with all this album stuff.” I said starring out the window.
“It’s okay Yuri. You’ll get your chance at college. And anyway, you can still study during your breaks. It’s been done before. I’ve read it in magazines.” Tony said encouragingly.
“Yeah, it’d be good. But right now, I’m really busy. Maybe later.” I said as I thought it over. Being a regular college kid would have been great. But I’d have to put that aside right now.
DongWan’s house was already quite crowded by the time we got there. People were occupying all the bottom level.
“Hey Yuri!” this guy said coming up to me. I had never seen him before.
“Hi. Do I know you?” I asked him.
“No, but could you sign this for me?” he asked holding out a marker pen and pointing at his shirt.
“Isn’t it kinda strange though?” I said taking the pen uncertainly.
“I know you’ll become really famous. I just want an autograph.” He said as I started to sign on his back.
“C’mon Yuri, let’s go find the others.” Tony oppa said as I finished, pulling me by the elbow.
We found Kang Ta, Yoo Jin, Brian, Hwan Hee, Hye Sung, Min Woo, MiYun, Dong Wan and Andy standing together just by the indoor pool.
“Nice place you have here Dong Wan oppa!” I said smiling at him.
“Thanks. You guys having fun?” he asked looking around at us.
“Well, the party’s just getting started! Let’s join in!” Min Woo yelled. After that, we split up to our individual groups.
I stayed with Hwan Hee, Mi Yun and Dong Wan while Kang Ta and Yoo Jin went off together, and my brother, Andy, Hye Sung, Min Woo and Brian walked off together.
“Hey baby. Rough day?” Hwan Hee asked me, following Mi Yun and Dong Wan to some seats outside the pool enclosure.
“Yeah. But not too bad. I just finished the video. Bit tiring, but I think it looks really cool.” I said sitting down.
“Unnie, Monday is the big day?” Mi Yun asked me as she sat down on Dong Wan’s lap.
“Oh yeah, the day we all get to go out and buy your smashing album!” Dong Wan oppa said.
“Mhmm. It comes out on Monday. I still can’t believe it!” I said excitedly. “I just hope it all goes okay!”
“Don’t worry. Of course it will! We will all be there to support you.” Hwan Hee said putting his arm around me.
“I know baby. Hey, so you guys excited about college?” I asked wonderingly.
“Well, for us, not really. It’s like old for us.” Dong Wan said referring to him and Hwan Hee.
“Me on the other hand, yeah. I was sort of getting sick of high school.” Mi Yun said.
“Yeah, I know how you feel.” I murmured.
“You’ll have to come to our college and sing. Special guest!” Hwan Hee said.
I looked up and was about to say something when I saw a group of guys walk up behind Dong Wan oppa and Mi Yun. I gestured to them and asked, “Who are they?”
Dong Wan oppa turned around and saw the guys. His face changed to a stern look, he asked Mi Yun to stand up and he stood too.
“Yunnie, you and the others go inside for awhile.” He said not looking at us.
“Why oppa? Who are they?” Mi Yun asked curiously. She had never seen the guys before either.
“Nothing for you all to worry about. Please Hwan Hee, take the girls inside.” He said firmly.
I backed away with Mi Yun reluctantly. The guys were still approaching. I was getting worried. They did not look as if they had been invited to the party.
“Let’s go get our oppas.” I whispered to Mi Yun as Hwan Hee went back outside. She nodded and we ran off to find the others.
I spotted Min Woo oppa first and said to him hurriedly, “Min Woo oppa, Dong Wan oppa is outside with a group of these five guys. I think they’re gonna get into a fight!”
“Where is he?” Min Woo asked straight away.
“Behind the pool enclosure, near the seats.” I said as the other guys started to stand up too.
“Let’s go. It has to be Danny and his group.” Hye Sung said urgently.
They all went towards the enclosure and Yoo Jin, Mi Yun and I followed.
“Dongseng, you shouldn’t be here. Stay inside. It isn’t safe.” Tony oppa said. He and Kang Ta also had no idea what was going on, but he was willing to help out his friends.
“I don’t care. My boyfriend is out there with Mi Yun’s boyfriend and you expect us to wait inside while who knows what is happening? No way.” I said, refusing to obey him.
We walked out to the seats and I could see Dong Wan oppa and Hwan Hee oppa standing there having a heated discussion with the other group’s leader. He had to be Danny. All of a sudden, Danny pushed Dong Wan’s shoulder.
“Oh God, please watch over our friends. Don’t let anything happen to them.” I prayed to myself as Dong Wan pushed the guy right back.
“Yuri, you shouldn’t be here. I don’t want you to get hurt.” Andy said turning around from infront of me.
“Andy, stop worrying about me. My boyfriend, brother and you are all out here, along with my closest friends. I have to be here.” I said determinedly.
The other group started to advance on our group and then it started to get intense. There was pushing and shoving. Mi Yun, standing next to me was wringing her hands and fidgeting on the spot. Yoo Jin was also getting worried, with a solemn expression on her face.
The fight was becoming full on. Punches, kicks, head locks. It was getting serious. I watched as Dong Wan was punched full on in the stomach, he fell to the ground in pain. Before I knew it, Mi Yun was running out there into the midst of the fight.
“Mi Yun, No!” I yelled after her.
“Oppa! Oppa! Are you okay?” she asked as she bent over Dong Wan.
“I’m fine…What are you doing here Mi Yun? Stay away. It’s not safe…” I heard him reply, while trying to regain his breath.
“Mi Yun! Watch out!” I yelled running forward with Yoo Jin as I saw Danny lunge for Mi Yun.
He grabbed her around the neck with one arm and slid a knife out of its holder with his hand. He held it close to her neck, forcing her head to be pushed upwards.
“Let her go.” Dong Wan said, getting up off the ground with the help of Tony oppa. By then, the rest of the fight had dwindled to a stop as they stared at Danny holding Mi Yun.
“Not until your guys take a step backwards.” Danny said dangerously.
“Guys, give him some room.” Dong Wan said motioning to our friends to step back.
I was starring at Mi Yun’s face. She was so scared. Her face was pale white and she stood really still. Any move and the knife may cut into her throat.
“Now, I’ll let her go if you tell me where your cousin is. I don’t wanna hurt anyone.” Danny said cautiously.
“I can’t. Hye Rim’s disappeared. I don’t know where she went.” Dong Wan said truthfully.
“Don’t give me that ****. I know you know where she is.” Danny said furiously, “She owes me.”
“My cousin has nothing to do with me. I haven’t seen her for months. That’s the truth Danny.” Dong Wan replied.
“Where’s the last time you saw her?” Danny asked.
“With you remember? Outside that club. Before she disappeared. I really don’t know where she is.” An exasperated Dong Wan said.
“Tell me where she is! I know you know!” Danny repeated again, pushing the knife against Mi Yun’s skin.
Mi Yun started to cry. She closed her eyes and sobbed. I could see that she thought she was going to die.
All of a sudden, there were blue and white lights flashing around the side of the house. Someone must have called the police. Danny saw them and took a step back.
“Well, for now, I’ll leave it here. But, if I don’t find her soon. I’ll be back here for another little interrogation.” Danny said letting go of Mi Yun and pushing her forward. She collapsed to the ground as Danny and his followers ran off to the fence, jumped over it and disappeared into the night.
Dong Wan ran forward and held Mi Yun in his arms. She shook violently and had tears streaming down his face.
“Mi Yun, I’m so sorry. You shouldn’t have been out here. Are you okay? Baby, it’s okay, I’m here. I’m so sorry.” He kept on saying, holding his sobbing girlfriend.
I ran to Hwan Hee and hugged him from behind. I was so relieved that he was okay. He turned around and hugged me back.
“Thank God you’re alright. I was so scared.” I said holding him tight.
“I’m fine Yuri. You shouldn’t have been out here either. It was getting messy. I can’t lose you.” Hwan Hee said lifting my chin and kissing me.
I kissed him back feeling totally relieved. Suddenly, I felt Andy’s eyes watching us and I pulled away from Hwan Hee quickly.
“Baby, we’d better go see how Mi Yun is.” I said going towards Mi Yun and Dong Wan oppa.
Andy stood there watching Yuri and Hwan Hee kissing. He felt uncomfortable watching them, but he couldn’t help watching. “I miss her so much. I can’t believe she’s with another guy. And I’m watching them make out!” he said turning away in a sudden when he realized that Yuri had noticed him watching.
After that, we all accompanied Mi Yun to the hospital. She had mild shock. The police had asked us what had happened. We just stuck with the story that some party crashers had shown up and were drunk. They believed it. In actual fact, Danny had been going out with Hye Rim – Dong Wan’s cousin. She had left him a few months ago and had not told Danny anything. She had also split with his money as well. She was still on the loose and no one had any idea where she went. There were rumours that she was on drugs now and had run away so as not to be caught. Dong Wan oppa and his cousin had not really been all that close.
I wondered to myself, “Wow, so much has happened since I’ve come here.” I wondered how much things had changed since I’d come from America and also if things were still yet to change.
~Monday – Album launch~
I was sitting on the stage set up especially in the heart of the city, smiling and signing copies of my new album. It felt so wonderful to be out there doing all them famous star stuff. I never thought it could ever happen to me. Fame was a little unnerving at times. The crazy reporters, fans, but I guess the fact that they love music was good enough reason for me to put up with them. I was just an ordinary girl, with a dream. And if fulfilling that dream also required the public appearances, then I’d go along with it.
“Okay everyone. I think that’s the end of autograph signing. Thankyou all for coming and of course, for supporting me by buying my album. I really really appreciate it and I really hope you like it!” I said standing up and talking into a microphone. I bowed to the crowd and waved, then walked off the stage with the sounds of clapping following me.
“Tony oppa. I’m so happy! Did you see how many people there were? I was so surprised!” I said hugging him as he came up to me.
“That’s great Yuri. I knew you could do it! But dongseng, I have some bad news though. I’d have told you later on but the doctors said that I had to talk to you right away.” My oppa said seriously.
“What is it?” I asked curiously, wondering at the seriousness of Tony oppa’s voice and expression.
“Let’s go sit for a moment.” He said leading me to a bench.
“I just got a phone call from Doctor Yoo. He said that when your neck was injured, they took some X-rays and scans of your neck, to ensure that everything was okay. Well, the results came back awhile ago, but they just found something different today. They need you to go back to the hospital to double check. As soon as possible.” Tony oppa said worriedly.
“What? Really? Did they say what they found?” I asked instinctively reaching for my neck.
“No. They’re not sure. I’ll drive you there now, if that’s okay with Mr Soo Man.” My brother offered.
“Okay. I’ll just go get my things. Mr Soo Man said I could have the rest of the day off.” I replied, standing up.
“I’ll wait for you by the car.” Tony said.
I ran off to get my things. I was beginning to become worried. What had the doctors found? I was also scared. Something serious was going to happen. I could just feel it.
~Dr Yoo’s office~
“Hello Yuri. Tony, have a seat.” He said motioning to two black metal chairs infront of his large, file laden desk.
“Doctor Yoo, you said you wanted to see me?” I asked taking a seat, my brother taking the other.
“Yes. Well, you see. We checked over your results from the scans from your injury and this is what we found.” He said passing some X-rays to me to have a look.
“I just see my neck.” I said, not making much of the black and white transparent films and passing them to Tony oppa.
“Well, you see. This here is your throat. The bones, I won’t go into detail. But this here is something much more complex.” He said when Tony passed the films back to him and he pointed to a small white patch beside what he’d said was my throat.
“What are you trying to say?” Tony asked.
“Well, what I’m trying to say is that you may have a throat tumor. It’s early stages yet, but we need to double check to ensure we are correct.” He said.
At the word “tumor”, my heart beat started to quicken. What did it all mean? Did I have cancer? No way. I was a healthy person.
“So doctor, are you saying I have…um…cancer?” I stuttered, starting to feel sick.
“Like I said, it’s early yet. But that is a possibility.” He said calmly.
Tony oppa reached out and grabbed my hand. I held on tight. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“But… how can she? She’s never been really sick.” Tony oppa said.
“I know. But it’s probably in its early stages.” Dr Yoo said, “Symptoms probably haven’t shown up as yet.”
“Can we be sure? I…I want to know if this is really serious.” I said, wanting to know for real if I had a life threatening disease.
“Of course. We will have some scans taken today, if that is alright with the two of you.” Dr Yoo said.
“Of course it is.” I said, a little pale. I wanted to know as soon as possible.
The scans were taken and I had to wait until the next day for the results. I knew it’d be a long wait. I was so worried and nervous and upset. I sat quietly in the car thinking to myself as Tony oppa drove me home. I couldn’t think properly. This could change my life forever. I’d been through so many life changing events since I’d reached Korea. But this time, I didn’t think I would be able to cope.
“Lord, how do I deal with this? Please help me. How can I keep on going? Give me the strength.” I prayed to myself that night as I sat at the table pushing my food around on my plate with my fork. Kangta oppa was out with Yoo Jin that night, so me and Tony oppa were alone in the apartment.
“Yuri, you must eat something.” Tony oppa said softly. He hadn’t said much since we were at the hospital. I knew he was giving me time to think it all over. I loved him for that. My oppa, so understanding.
“I’m not hungry.” I said not looking up.
DING DONG DING DONG
“I’ll get that.” Tony oppa said starting to get up.
“No oppa, I will. You finish your dinner. At least you’re eating it.” I said getting up and going to the door.
I opened the door and Andy oppa was standing there.
“Come in oppa. Have you eaten yet?” I asked stepping aside so he could come in.
“Yeah, I have. Yuri, why’d you leave all of a sudden at the launch?” he asked as I locked the door behind him.
“Um… Tony oppa, it’s Andy.” I said walking into the dining area with Andy, “Let’s go out on the balcony to talk.” I said to him.
On the balcony, the cool breeze of autumn floated about us. It was refreshing and on any other night, I would have enjoyed it.
“So, where’d you rush off to in such a hurry?” Andy oppa asked leaning on the edge of the barrier.
“I…I…Andy oppa!” I said suddenly going to Andy and hugging him.
I’d caught him by surprise and he slowly hugged me back. “What’s wrong Yuri? C’mon, don’t cry. Tell me what’s bothering you.” He said rubbing my back.
“Well…today, I went with Tony oppa…to…the…doctor…” I said between gasps.
“What? Why’d you go to the doctors?” Andy asked curiously.
“Well, they took scans of my neck when I was in hospital last time…They think that…they found…a…lump…” I trailed off.
“Oh God Yuri. You can’t be serious. It can’t be…” Andy said shocked.
“Yes…but they’re making sure now. I might have throat cancer oppa. I don’t know what to do.” I said distraught.
“It’s okay Yuri. They’re not sure. And even if it is true. You have to be strong. I know that it’s hard. But you have to be!” he said comforting and encouraging me.
Andy talked to me for about a few hours, trying to let me see the straight road. I knew that he was right. If the results showed positive, then I knew that I could do nothing. God gave me my health, but if he wanted to take it away, I couldn’t do anything about it. Just trust in Him and keep on going. Living the most I could out of life.
A car was parked outside Yuri’s house when Hwan Hee got there. “It looks like Andy’s” he thought to himself. He looked up to the third floor balcony and saw Yuri standing there next to Andy oppa and talking intently.
“What’s going on?” he thought to himself as he went up to the apartment. He felt a tinge of jealousy as he went up in the elevator. He had heard some of the things that had been said when he had left the hospital room to give Andy and Yuri some privacy. He knew that their relationship had been really deep. They had practically grown up together. He wondered how far the relationship was now.
“Hwan Hee!” I said as I saw him through the doors of the balcony. I ran to him and hugged him.
“Hey baby. What happened to you earlier? I looked everywhere for you at the launch.” He said eyeing Andy who was just coming inside.
“I have something to tell you. It’s bad news.” I said sitting him down on the couch.
“What bad news? Aren’t we supposed to be celebrating today?” Hwan Hee said pulling me down beside him.
“Remember the time when I was in hospital?” I asked, he nodded, “Doctor Yoo called today and told me that they had found something on my scans. They said it may be a tumor hear in my throat.” I said touching the spot that the doctor had showed me. I could feel the lump now. It was real.
“Yuri. You can’t be serious. How can that be?” Hwan Hee asked unbelievingly.
“They took some more X-rays and scans and I’m still waiting for the results on that. But the doctor said that I may have cancer.” I said holding his hand.
“Oh Yuri. That’s terrible.” Hwan Hee said hugging me, not knowing what else to say.
“It’s okay. I’ve come to see it as part of my life, if it’s real. I know there’s nothing I can do.” I said hugging him back.
“I still can’t believe it though.” Tony oppa said, “God gave you your voice to bless people with. C’mon, you’ve touched thousands of people, probably more with that voice. I can’t believe he wants to take it all away now.”
“Well, Yuri has all her friends around her and we all will stand by her.” Andy said determinedly.
“Thanks oppa.” I smiled weakly, “I know you’re all here for me.”
The days ahead seemed so gloomy as I waited for the results. But I knew that there were people around me that cared for me and would stay by me no matter what.
~3 days later~
The waiting almost killed me. I was nervous, moody, irritable, unable to eat properly and really tired at times. I wondered if it was just me, or were the symptoms to what the doctor had described were already in affect. I didn’t want to think about it. For the last three days, I had been suffering from all the depressive symptoms and also had started to touch my throat, where the lump was, a lot. It had become a reflex. I thought that maybe if I touched the spot enough, I’d suddenly find nothing there and that it had all been one terrible nightmare.
“The results are in Yuri. As you know. Please have a seat.” Doctor Yoo said leading me and Tony oppa into the room.
“Thankyou Doctor. I can see from your face that the news is not good.” I said, already sensing what the doctor would be saying.
“Yes, you’re right Yuri. I’m sorry. You do have the tumour that we feared would be what we’d seen earlier in the scans.” Doctor Yoo said slowly.
“Will I…will I…” I tried to get out, but I couldn’t say the words. I cleared my throat again, grasping my brother’s hand and taking another deep breath, tried again, “Will I die?”
“The cancer will slowly force you to become extremely tired and soon after that, you will lose your voice. After that, death is just another stage of the illness. This form of the illness is unfortunately incurable. We have yet to find a cure. I’m very sorry Yuri.” He said sadly.
A tremendous sadness overcame me and tears started to trickle out of my eyes. I thought that I’d been prepared for this, but obviously, nothing could prepare a girl to come to terms with her death this quickly.
“Oppa!..” I said sobbing.
Tony oppa came over to me and hugged me. We stayed like that for a long time.
“Doctor, how long does she have?” Tony oppa finally said.
“It’s hard to tell. With this type of condition, most patients would have about 6 months to a year, but there have been cases in which the patients have survived up to 5 years. It’s a rare disease. We can give you medication all the way through. To ease the effects of the symptoms. I’m truly sorry for having to be the one to tell you this Yuri.” Doctor Yoo said sadly.
“No Doctor, I am glad you did. It’s no one’s fault. I have to live with it I guess. No one can help me.” I said, trying to be brave.
My life was drawing to an end early, and I could not do anything about it. Growing old would not be an option for me. I would have no future beyond five years. I wouldn’t even live to be 25 years old. Never get married, have children, see my grandchildren. The things I would regret the most would be leaving my loved ones behind.
“No unnie! I don’t believe it!” Mi Yun said running up to me with tears in her eyes.
I had told all my friends about my condition with the help of Tony oppa. I’d started to cry during the end and he had had to finish it off for me. Hwan Hee stood holding me tightly. Andy on the far side of the room had tears in his eyes, along with Tony oppa. Mi Yun was sobbing and shaking her head, unbelievingly. Dong Wan, Min Woo and Hye Sung oppas were totally shocked. Brian and Kang Ta had tears in their eyes too. Yoo Jin had tears trickling down her face as well, she stood staring off into space. Everyone just couldn’t believe it.
“Are you sure? How can this be? It just can’t happen to you.” Kang Ta oppa said shaking his head.
“But it is.” I said, wiping my tears away, “I want to stay strong. I need all your help. I don’t want you to treat me like a invalid. I’m still Yuri, the same crazy girl who you all are friends with. I want to keep singing too.”
“What? How can you keep singing? Didn’t you just tell us that the doctor told you that you would lose your voice?” Hye Sung oppa asked.
“Yes. But I haven’t lost it yet. I can’t let the fans down. I want to keep singing. I want everything to go back to the way things were. Keep everything normal. As normal as they can be.” I said determinedly.
“What will Mr Soo Man say?” Dong Wan oppa asked, looking at me.
“I don’t know. He can’t cancel my contract seeing as there are still two years to go. As long as I can sing, I don’t see why he has to kick me out of SM.” I said.
“But how will you tell the fans?” Brian oppa asked.
“Not now. I don’t want the fans to know now. Wait awhile.” I said sadly.
I didn’t want to stop singing. Stopping that would have been like killing me there and then. That was one of the things I loved most in the world. I was determined to keep going at it until my voice truly left me. Nothing was going to take that away from me.
~A few days later~
I’d sort of recovered from the initial shock of finding out that I had cancer. I had already gone to Mr Soo Man and explained my condition and he had taken it quite well. I expected him to kick me out, but he was sympathetic and told me that he would definitely want me to continue working at SM. I was overjoyed. He also agreed with me about not notifying the fans as yet. Give it a couple of months at least.
My parents were notified of my condition a few days ago. My mother had cried over the phone. My father had taken it really quietly. They said they were going to fly down as soon as possible. I missed them a lot.
Yesterday, I’d returned to the hospital to collect the medication that Dr Yoo had prescribed. I was a bad patient. I couldn’t take pills. I’d tried many, many times and I just couldn’t swallow them. Tony oppa would have to crush them for me every time.
“Hey Yuri, your medicine time.” Tony oppa called from the kitchen where he was with Kang Ta oppa.
“Coming.” I answered as I jumped up from my bed where I had been going over some of the songs for the next day’s performance.
“How are you feeling?” Kang Ta asked as I walked in.
“I’m fine. Just a little tired.” I said giving a weak smile. Lately, I’d been getting tired really easily. That was not a good sign. I didn’t want to worry my oppa’s too much.
“Take it easy okay? Go to bed after this. Enough practise. You’re 100% perfect. No need to go over it all again.” Tony said handing my a spoon full of crushed tablets.
I downed the spoon full following it quickly with a glass full of water. I hated taking medicine. Especially since I could actually taste the tablets.
“Night oppas” I said tiredly as I padded off to bed.
“Night Yuri” they both said together.
I fell asleep dreaming of a bright white light and beautiful glowing butterflies just out of reach.
~One week later~
“Omma! Appa! Over here!” Tony yelled, waving as he spotted his parents in the busy airport terminal.
Mrs Ahn ran over and gave her son a big hug. She held onto him tightly. “Oh I’ve missed you Tony. How’s your sister?”
“She’s fine omma. A little tired these days, but you know her, she keeps on going. She has inner strength.” Tony said smiling.
“Tony, let’s go. I’m a little tired myself and your mother is really anxious to see your sister.” Mr Ahn said clapping a hand on Tony’s back.
“Sure. But Yuri’s not home right now. She’s at a photo shoot.” Tony said wheeling his parents luggage trolley out to the carpark.
“Oh dear. I hope she’s not exerting herself. If she’s really that tired, she shouldn’t be doing too much.” Mrs Ahn said with tears in her eyes.
“It’s okay omma. Yuri is strong. She refuses to let people think she’s weak. She won’t stop work. Not until she absolutely has to. Can I ask you both to do something for her sake?” Tony asked his parents as he started to load the car with the luggage.
“Absolutely, anything Tony.” Mr Ahn said helping his son with one particular large suitcase.
“Please don’t treat her like she’s sick. She hates that. It really wrecks what there is left of her cheerful nature.” He said getting into the car.
“Of course. We don’t want her to feel depressed. But I can’t promise that when I see her, I won’t cry. It’ll be too much for me. I miss her so much.” Mrs Ahn said sighing as Tony started to drive them back to the apartment.
“It’s okay omma. We’ve all showed some emotion since we found out. Our friends here have been excellent. And her boyfriend has been very understanding. He’s really great.” Tony said pulling out into the traffic.
“Yes, you said something about that the last time you called. How about Andy?” Mr Ahn asked his son.
“Andy? He’s been okay. Understanding as well.” Tony explained all that had happened and filled his parents in on everything that had happened that he could think of all the way back to the apartment.
“Finally!” I said as I got out of the car and dragged my boyfriend with me into the apartment block, “My omma and appa are here! Hwan Hee, quick!”
“Okay okay Yuri. Take it easy. You’ve been saying that the whole way over here.” He said adjusting his clothes when I finally let go of him infront of the elevator.
“It’s your first time meeting my parents. You should be really excited too!” I said as I walked into the elevator and punched the 3rd floor button.
“Of course. I really can’t wait. But you don’t have to destroy my very mature and goodlooking image by readjusting my clothes!” he said smiling.
I reached out to punch him and he grabbed my hand, holding it tight.
“Good looking, yeah right. Mature? Please…” I said giving him a “you wish” look.
We reached the door of the apartment and I quickly got out my keys. I opened the door slowly and all of a sudden I was enveloped in a huge bear hug.
“Omma!” I said getting over the surprise, “I’ve missed you.”
“No Yuri, not as much as I’ve missed you. Are you okay?” she asked sweeping my hair on the left side behind my ear and taking a good look at me.
“I’m fine omma. Really great now you and appa are here. Where is appa?” I said looking around the apartment.
“Right here Yuri.” My dad said as he walked in from the balcony. He too hugged me.
“Yuri, you’re taller, which is a good sign, but you’re also thinner. Haven’t you been eating?” Omma asked worried.
“I eat like a pig omma. But lately, I don’t really have an appetite.” I said leading them into the living room. “Please sit.”
“Are you both okay? Need to take a rest?” I asked both of them as they say down.
“No no, we’re fine Yuri. How about you? We heard you were out at a photo shoot.” My father asked.
“No. Not tired at all. Oh, omma, appa, I better introduce you to Hwan Hee.” I said suddenly remembered my boyfriend standing behind me. I pulled him forward.
“We’ve heard many good things about you Hwan Hee.” My omma said smiling at him.
“It’s a pleasure to finally meet you both.” he said shaking their hands.
“Okay, family reunion time. Let’s have some tea.” Kang Ta said appearing with a tray of cups and a teapot. Tony oppa followed carrying a plate of muffins that Mrs Kim downstairs had made.
After that, we talked for a long time about everyday things. We had so much to catch up on. Finally, the topic came up that everyone was expecting. Me. I explained everything to them about what the doctor had said. My mother burst into tears when I mentioned how long patients with this disease were expected to live.
“Omma, please don’t cry. All of us have come to realize the fact that God has a plan for Yuri.” Tony oppa said trying to comfort my mother.
“Yes omma. I know that it’s hard to accept, but life goes on. I am determined to not let this disease bring me down. I don’t want to have to give up just yet. I want to live what life I have left to the full. So that I will have no regrets. Please learn to accept it too.” I said tears coming to my own eyes. I held onto Hwan Hee’s hand tightly.
“I’ll try Yuri. I’ll try for you. So will your father.” My omma said wiping at her eyes with a tissue.
“Thankyou.” I said softly.
I knew that it would be really hard for my parents to accept. But I couldn’t escape the inevitable. I was sure that they would come to terms with it all just as I had. I wanted to be happy in the remaining time I had left.
For the next few months, I went and visited as many hospitals and other homes as possible, also trying to not give anything away to the fans. It was hard because I was continually getting weaker. Some days, I felt like not getting up. I just felt so tired, but then I thought to myself, I don’t have all that long to go. If I just stay in bed, I may not ever get back out again. I didn’t want to sit in bed and just waste away before everyone’s eyes. That is what kept me going. Also, the fact that the fans were so loyal. Turning up at every appearance, asking for autographs wherever I went. I knew I couldn’t let them down.
Something else I’d realized was that Andy either came to see me, messaged me on my phone or called me everyday. He was really great. I also thought back to the dream that I’d had when I was in hospital. Hwan Hee and Andy had wanted me to choose between them. I knew I hadn’t given them an answer. I didn’t know what to do. I loved them both. Andy was my first love. Every time I thought of him, I could hear “First Love” by Shinhwa play in my mind. I could never forget that. But Hwan Hee was so wonderful. He really understood me and cared for me. He treated me like an angel that I did not deserve to be. My mind always went into confusion when I thought about all this. Better to not put myself through this emotional and mental trauma. I was suffering enough.
“Why do you wear that ring on the necklace?” Hwan Hee asked one day as we waited for everyone to come. It was night-time and we were in his apartment with Brian and Yoo Jin. We were all planning to go to watch a movie together, the whole gang.
“This? You don’t know? Here, look at this.” I said showing him the ring thinking that it was nothing.
“Why do you wear it?” Hwan Hee asked again in a solemn tone when he’d seen the inscription.
“It’s something I treasure. I guess I haven’t really thought about it.” I said holding the ring in my fingers and twirling it and down on the chain around my neck.
“But, you’re not with Andy anymore.” Hwan Hee said, I could sense a sort of anger in his voice, “Why are you still wearing it? You broke up.”
I started to get angry. Hwan Hee knew how much I loved him. I didn’t think that he was the jealous type.
“Why can’t I wear it? It’s something that I treasure. I thought you weren’t the jealous type.” I said standing up.
“Well, what boyfriend wouldn’t be jealous when you wear a ring all the time with your ex’s name and yours inscribed on the inside. Don’t you think I’d be curious to wondering if you two still had something going?” he said back, standing up as well.
“So that’s the way you feel? I always thought that you were different. You didn’t care about it. That you knew how I felt about you. I guess I was wrong!” I said tears starting to come out of my eyes. Yoo Jin and Brian were watching shocked at what was happening infront of them. Hwan Hee and I had never fought before.
“Maybe you were. Maybe I don’t know how you feel about me!” he yelled at me.
“Fine, if that’s the way you feel, here, I won’t wear it. I don’t care anymore. Here, you have it!” I yelled taking the chain and ring off and throwing it at him.
I started to walk towards the door without looking back.
“Where are you going?” Hwan Hee yelled after me.
“Your dying girlfriend is just going to go and die! The earlier the better for you! Then you don’t have any reason to become angry and jealous!” I screamed as I ran out the door crying and ran out to the street.
I ran on and on, tears streaming down my face. People were staring at me as I ran past, but I didn’t care. I had to get away from there. I ran until I reached a park beside a lake, there, I dropped below a tree and curled myself into ball with my head on my knees sobbing and sobbing.
“How could he? I thought he knew how much I cared for him. I really thought that he was the perfect guy for me. He was so understanding, what happened?” I mumbled to myself between sobs.
Finally I stopped crying and looked up at the moon through the leaves of the tree. I started to think clearly and realized that it was not Hwan Hee’s fault at all. I had been unfair to him in going on wearing the ring. Even if I had promised Andy. It was time I came to terms with both of them. I couldn’t keep on holding onto both their hearts. It was not fair to both of them. It was Hwan Hee’s right to be jealous. Man, who wouldn’t be? After seeing his girlfriend always wearing a ring that her ex had given her. He was completely right. Poor baby. I was the one who had started this fight. It hadn’t been his fault. It was bound to happen. I’d been so stupid. He was human after all, he could be hurt and get jealous.
“Baby, I’m so sorry.” A voice said out of the darkness suddenly beside me.
“What are you doing here?” I asked as a dark shape sat down beside me.
“I didn’t mean to go off at you before.” Hwan Hee said softly.
“No. It was my fault. I shouldn’t have been wearing the ring. It was unfair to you.” I said before he could say anything else.
“No Yuri, if it’s something you treasure, of course you should wear it.” He said stroking my hair.
“I was selfish oppa. I didn’t take into consideration your feelings. I’m sorry.” I said staring out at the lake.
“You really scared me you know. When you ran out like that. Saying those words, I really thought that you’d…that you’d…” he said not knowing how to complete the sentence.
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean it. I was just so worked up. The medication makes me moody and irritable. It wasn’t me saying that.” I said apologetically.
“It’s okay. I should have been more considerate. I’m just so glad you’re okay.” He said pulling me close.
“I’m glad you found me.” I said with tears in my eyes, “Thanks for everything.”
Hwan Hee kissed me then, I had tears running down my cheeks. I knew what I would have to do. It was just too cruel to keep both Hwan Hee and Andy on the line. I was the cruelest girl that lived. Keeping two guys to myself. Selfishly. I was so torn apart. It was time that I let them go. Let them fly free. Live their own lives, apart from me.
~The next day~
I was sitting in the same park this time with the sun shining. I’d asked both Andy and Hwan Hee to meet me there. It was time to tell them. I’d spent the entire night tossing and turning, finally deciding on what I was going to do.
“Thankyou both for coming.” I said softly, looking out at the lake.
“What’s up?” Andy asked as he sat down on the grass infront of me on the left.
“Yeah. I was wondering why you asked me to come.” Hwan Hee said sitting on my right.
“Okay. You guys have to listen carefully to me. I need to tell you both something.” I said carefully.
“I don’t want to hurt either of you.” I looked especially at Hwan Hee who was looking at me intently.
“These days, it hasn’t been easy, on either of you. I’m sorry. It’s all because of me. I caused everything that has happened between the two of you and me. You both came to me in a dream and asked me to choose between the two of you. This happened while I was unconscious after the fight. I need to thank the both of you for helping me out of that. Even if it was to find out later that I would have cancer. I still thankyou for returning me back into life. I know that choosing between the two of you is something you both think will solve everything. But the truth is, I can’t. I’ve spent the last half year turning the whole thing around and around in my head. And nothing had helped. I can’t choose between the two of you. You are both my loves. Even though I want both of you, I know that I won’t be as selfish as that. I can’t keep you both hanging by a moment, waiting for me to decide. I have been selfish enough to keep it going on for this long. Please go on with your lives. After I… after I die, please forget about me.” I said tears streaming down my cheeks.
“Yuri. You can’t mean that. I could never forget you.” Hwan Hee said holding onto my hand.
“Yes I do Hwan Hee oppa. I’ve been really really cruel to you. I want you to know that I didn’t use you. That I truly loved you and still do. But keeping this going will only make things worse. Please understand.” I said looking at him, still with tears coming down my cheeks.
“I understand Yuri. Thankyou for ending this. But Hwan Hee’s right. I could never forget you either.” Andy said softly but sadly.
“I can’t let you both wait for me. I’m going to die, I know it’s coming soon. I’m not afraid of death, I’m just afraid of leaving you both. Death is really a part of living. But love is always stronger than all. I will always love you both.” I said truthfully.
~One month later~
“Mr Soo Man. I’ve come with something important to request.” I said as I sat down in his office.
“What is it Yuri? Are you feeling okay?” he asked anxiously.
“No, I’m fine. Well, as fine as I can be. It’s just I think it’s about time I announced to the public about my illness.” I said firmly.
“Yes. I agree. I was thinking it was about time too. At your next concert it shall be made public. It’ll be your one year anniversary of working with SM entertainment. How do you want to do it?” Mr Soo Man asked me.
“I think after the last song, I will tell the fans.” I said.
“That’s fine. You’ve been great Yuri. You’ve really touched many people.” Mr Soo Man said encouragingly.
“That’s what I hope for.” I said as I left his office.
~At Yuri’s Anniversary concert~
“Thankyou all so much. Now it’s time for my last song.” I paused getting a drink from the bottle I had on the floor next to me.
“This last song, is my absolute favourite. Born to make you happy. It holds true meaning for me. All my family and friends, I was born to make them happy. I know that each of them are watching right now and I just want you guys to be happy. You’ve really helped me in my life. To all you fans out there, I have a special announcement that I need to make to all of you at the end of this song. So please bare with me.” I said smiling as the music for the song started to play.
I sung like I’d never sung it before. I looked over at where my family and friends were sitting the whole time. My omma, appa, Tony, Kang Ta, Yoo Jin, Brian, Hwan Hee, Hye Sung, Dong Wan, Mi Yun, Min Woo and Andy. The people I loved the most. They all looked at me with emotion in their eyes. I forced myself to not cry. I was determined to stay ontop of it.
At the end of the song, the applause from the crowd was deafening. I smiled and bowed many times.
“Thankyou so much. And now, there is something that I want to share with everyone.” I said as the applause finally died down.
“I would like to ask my family and friends to come up here with me as I say this.” I said motioning to the group in the front to come up.
They were surprised but quickly filed onto the stage as I took another drink. I had been getting increasingly thirsty these days.
“All of these people mean so much to me. And all you guys, the fans! I love you so much. I need to make an important announcement now that I want all of you to take seriously. No matter how I don’t want to do this, I have to. So please listen.” A hush came over the auditorium.
“I found out recently, within the past year, that I’ve been diagnosed with throat cancer.” A murmur went through the crowd.
“I wanted all the fans to find out from me personally. This is something that has and will change my life forever. I am like you all, have hopes and dreams. Singing is something I love and I will not be giving it up. It is my dream and I have my chance now to fulfill it. I hope that each and every one of you never give up on your dreams and always stay strong. I must leave now, all of you please take care. Thankyou so much.” I said as body guards started to file across the stage and guide us backstage.
I’d done it. The whole world would soon know about my illness. I just hoped that I could still continue to do what I loved most, sing.
~Five months later~
My last concert ever was tonight. I knew that it’d be a struggle just to get through it. I wasn’t feeling too tired. The worst thing over the months was that I’d started noticing that my voice was deteriorating. I knew it wouldn’t be long before I would not be able to talk, let alone sing. That saddened me a lot.
“All ready?” Woo Hyuk oppa asked me as he walked past. He looked sad and sympathetic. Over the past five months, there had been rumours that me being sick was a hoax. There had been many press conferences. Finally, the public had come to understand what was happening to me.
“Yes oppa. All set.” I said taking another sip of my lemon tea. My throat was breaking down.
“Dear Lord, just let me get through this last concert. Sing without a flaw. Just for all the fans.” I prayed.
The concert started. I loved it all. The fans were persistent and loving. Shouting out “Yuri Ahn” all the time. I looked at them with tears in my eyes. I would miss them a lot. I sang through all the songs I’d released on my album. Seeing as I only released one album in the long time I’d been singing, I’d released many of my songs, and also, sang some new ones that’d be put on a compiled album.
“Thankyou so much.” I said. I knew it was nearing the end of the night. I had just one last song to sing.
“The last song…” I was interrupted by many of the fans yelling out, “No Yuri! Not your last!”
“But really, it is the last song.” I said again picking up my newly refreshed bottle of water.
“This song, I dedicate to each and everyone of you.” I said, “It’s called, Let the Music Heal Your Soul.”
I started to sing:
“Oh if someone writes a song
With a simple line
Just a song
Where his feelings show
And if someone feels the same
About the simple song
Oh sometimes, you can hear them say,
Music gives you happiness or sadness
But it also, it also heals your soul
Let the music heal your soul
Let the music take control
Let the music give you
The power to move any mountain
Oh if someone plays guitar
With some simple chords
So melodic,
And endearing too.
Oh if someone plays guitar
With the old piano
And maybe, you can hear them sing
Music gives you happiness or sadness
But it also, it also heals your soul
Let the music heal your soul
Let the music take control
Let the music give you the power to move any mountain
Oh yeah”
At this point, an instrumental part played while hundreds of little choir children ran out onto the stage and surrounded me in their little white robes. All holding candles. They looked like angels.
They sang with me:
“Let the music heal your soul
Let the music take control
Let the music heal your soul”
Over and over until the song ended. We all bowed to the crowd and there was a tremendous cheer. The applause lasted for about 5 minutes. Non-stop. I stood there with tears in my eyes. Not wanting to leave the stage.
“I love you all, forever.” I said, as I finally had to leave, tears coming to my eyes. That was something I would never ever forget, I would remember this night forever.
Each day past with a little bit of sadness. I could feel my physical body becoming weaker and weaker. I knew that my voice would not last. I tried to talk to as many people as I could. Before I couldn’t. My parents would call my relatives and I would talk to them for a long time on the phone. Mr Soo Man suggested that I make an appearance to the fans for one last time. Not to sing, but just to talk to the fans. It was like an interview. I enjoyed it a lot. All my friends would spend time talking to me always. I would never be alone for one instant. The only time would be when I was to sleep. During these times, I would have many wonderful thoughts about my life. Dreaming dreams that calmed and soothed me.
My dreams were filled with beautiful scenery and many many butterflies flying around me. I was dressed in white, running around the fields, or near a waterfall, or on a beach, always trying to catch the butterflies. They were so beautiful, with a beautiful translucent colour about them.
~New Year’s Day~
We were all gathered together at Hye Sung’s place. My parents had also been invited. The music was on, there was such a wonderful spirit about the place. I loved the atmosphere. Looking around, I could see everyone having a good time. I was dancing along with everyone else to the music.
“Unnie, where’s Tony oppa?” Mi Yun asked as she and Dong Wan oppa twirled around.
“He’s coming. He had to drop one of his friends off at the airport. He should be here soon.” I said softly. The last few days, my voice had constantly disappeared. It was quite scary, but I couldn’t stop it. I could only speak softly now, close to a whisper. Also, the thirst was getting unbearable. My throat ached constantly.
“Andy oppa, move over, I need to sit.” I croaked, sliding into the small space beside him on the couch.
“Hey Yuri. How are you feeling? Happy New Year.” He said giving me a hug.
“Yeah. Okay, Happy New Year.” I said back.
My father suddenly appeared near me and said urgently, “Yuri, something’s happened.”
“What? Appa? Is everything okay? Where’s omma?” I asked, standing up.
“Tony’s been in an accident. We have to go right now. They’re still on the highway.” My appa said pulling me through the room. Andy had followed.
“Mr Ahn, do you need me to drive?” he asked.
“Yes Andy, that’d be great. Let’s go.” He said, pulling on his coat and gloves.
I pulled on my coat, scarf and gloves and followed them both to Andy’s car. I was in a daze. Tony oppa? In an accident? That couldn’t be. He’d just called me earlier to say that he might be late. I couldn’t believe it.
We drove through the streets in silence. I was getting worried, my dad was silent, Andy just concentrated on driving, and my mother was wringing her hands with worry. The roads were slippery. There had been snow a few days earlier. Slush was everywhere. I’d especially told Tony oppa to be careful.
“Oh no! Tony!” my mother screamed all of a sudden when we stopped on the highway. There was a scene of total chaos on the road. My brother’s car was on the wrong lane, the front of it totally smashed. There was another car on the other side with it’s side totally wrecked as well.
All of us ran out of Andy’s car and towards the crash scene where paramedics were working furiously.
“Dear God.” I said when I saw my brother lying on a stretcher with blood all over him. I couldn’t even see where he had been hurt.
I rushed up to him with my mother.
“Oppa, please. Can you hear me?” I asked holding onto his hand. My mother was crying hard.
“Dongseng?” he asked coughing up blood. I held onto his hand tighter.
“Yes. I’m here oppa. You’re going to be okay.” I said as one of the paramedics worked hard on trying to stop the blood flow.
My oppa coughed again and said, “Yeah right… Yuri… I’m a mess…” he smiled weakly, blood trickling out of his mouth. I knew that he was in a lot of pain.
“No oppa. I’m not going to let you die on me. If anyone is going to die, it’ll be me. You can’t die oppa.” I said starting to cry.
“C’mon Yuri... Look at me… You’re strong…don’t cry…I’ll see you up there…You know that…” my oppa said as more blood trickled out. I could feel him draining away. His hand still gripped mine.
“Yes. But…what will I do without you?” I asked, tears streaming down my cheeks.
“…You’ll live on…You have omma and appa…Take care of them…I’m so cold…So very cold…The cold is nearly making me forget about the pain…” he said shivering.
“No oppa. No. You have to take care of them. I can’t. You know that. You can’t die.” I kept on saying through my tears.
“Take care omma, appa… see you soon Yuri…I’ll be here for you…” those were the last words from my oppa before his hand became limp and lifeless in mine.
“NOOOOO!!!!!!” I screamed, hugging my brother’s body. My mother was crying uncontrollably.
“You have to do something!” I said shaking the paramedic next to me, “Please!”
“I’m sorry. There’s nothing I can do. He lost too much blood before we got here. I’m really sorry.” He said sadly.
“Dear God, why did you do this to me? Oppa, come back. You can’t leave us. You can’t leave omma and appa. Come back!” I sobbed, my entire body shaking with emotion.
My brother was gone. He’d had such a short life. I couldn’t believe it. Andy pulled me up after awhile. The paramedics had to get him to the hospital anyway. I looked at his face one last time before they took him away. His face was calm and serene, as if her were asleep.
I turned and sobbed into Andy’s shoulder. I couldn’t handle it. My oppa. He had looked after every day of my life. The best older brother any little sister could ever ask for. He was my protector, my hero. I don’t know how to live without him. I’d thought that I’d be the first one to meet all the others in heaven. But, in a sudden turn of events, my brother had been given the first place. I knew I’d meet him soon.
A few days after that, I lost my voice. It came as a shock. I woke up one morning and couldn’t say a thing. I knew it would have happened sooner or later, but I didn’t expect it so suddenly. The days went by after the funeral, my mother had been hit hardest with my brother’s death. If he had been the perfect brother to me, he had definitely been the perfect son to my parents.
I felt an extreme sadness when I thought about how they would react when I too passed on. Would they be able to handle it? I had no idea. I really hoped that they would live on for us. It was hard, but I knew they would pull through. They were strong.
I got weaker and weaker, paler and paler. Not long after, when spring started, I was kept in bed. I couldn’t bring myself to walk. It was just too hard to stand up. I needed help to go to the toilet. Sometimes, I lay in bed with an unbearable burning throat. I’d clutch my mother’s hand and grit my teeth. Other times, headaches would cause my head to spin and soon after, I’d need to close my eyes.
When I could stay awake, I’d read the letters from the fans that Mr Soo Man kept bring in. The letters were so sweet. Some of them made me cry. There were so many of them, that I knew I wouldn’t be able to read them all. I felt sorry to those fans whose letters I wouldn’t get the chance to read.
Other times, Andy or Hwan Hee would offer to babysit me. I thought that it was ridiculous. But my mother would not take a rest unless there was someone with me. They would read to me, tell me what trouble Min Woo oppa had gotten up to. Another fight Mi Yun and Dong Wan oppa got into, the things that Brian oppa would say, Hye Sung oppa’s tactics on trying to pick up on girls. I found it very entertaining. Also, sometimes I would just want them to sit with me, in silence. The whole gang would sometimes pack into my room and keep me entertained for hours. Seeing them so lively made me feel happy that they were happy, but sometimes I would feel sad too. Asking God, “Why can’t I be like them? Be healthy?” I would miss all of my friends so much.
Spring came and went, the sky cleared up and the flowers blossomed. The sun came out and shone through Yuri’s window. The birds returned in time to say goodbye to Yuri. It was such a beautiful day as she lay on her bed with her head on her omma’s lap, with her appa standing over them both. Each of Yuri’s hands held tightly, one by Andy, the other by Hwan Hee. Her two loves. As she had hoped, she was surrounded by her loved ones. On the lap where she had drawn her first breath, she quietly drew her last. There was no farewell except for one loving look, and a soft little sigh. The sunshine streamed in through the window over the calm, peaceful face. All of those around her thanked God that Yuri was well at last.
“Tony oppa? I missed you so much!” I said as I hugged my oppa.
“Yuri. I’ve missed you too. I’ve been waiting for you.” Tony oppa said hugging me back.
“I feel so free.” I said pulling away and twirling around in my white sparkling dress.
“I’ve never seen you so happy. You’re finally well.” Tony said smiling at his little sister.
“Yes, I don’t feel any pain anymore.” I said reaching my hand out at the many butterflies fluttering about me. One of them landed on my hand and I smiled, “I couldn’t catch these before. They kept flying away.”
“That was because it wasn’t your time yet. They weren’t ready for you. But now, you are.” Tony oppa said coming beside me.
“I miss them oppa.” I said looking up at Tony with full eyes.
“I know. I miss them too. But don’t worry, we can watch over them now.” He said pointing through the whiteness.
I could see my parents and friends all together. They seemed fine. I would always watch over them, forever. My oppa and I would never let anything happen to them, ever. I was finally something that I’d dreamed of, a guardian angel.
